Cardiac risk stratification in cancer patients: A longitudinal patient –patient network analysis
by Yuan Hou, Yadi Zhou, Muzna Hussain, G. Thomas Budd, Wai Hong Wilson Tang, James Abraham, Bo Xu, Chirag Shah, Rohit Moudgil, Zoran Popovic, Chris Watson, Leslie Cho, Mina Chung, Mohamed Kanj, Samir Kapadia, Brian Griffin, Lars Svensson, Patrick Collier, Feixiong Cheng BackgroundCardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in general population and the second leading cause of mortality and morbidity in cancer survivors after recurrent malignancy in the United States. The growing awareness of cancer therapy –related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) has led to an emerging field of cardio-oncology; yet, there is limited k...

Association between exercise habits and stroke, heart failure, and mortality in Korean patients with incident atrial fibrillation: A nationwide population-based cohort study
by Hyo-Jeong Ahn, So-Ryoung Lee, Eue-Keun Choi, Kyung-Do Han, Jin-Hyung Jung, Jae-Hyun Lim, Jun-Pil Yun, Soonil Kwon, Seil Oh, Gregory Y. H. Lip BackgroundThere is a paucity of information about cardiovascular outcomes related to exercise habit change after a new diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). We investigated the association between exercise habits after a new AF diagnosis and ischemic stroke, heart failure (HF), and all-cause death. Methods and findingsThis is a nationwide population-based cohort study using data from the Korea National Health Insurance Service. A retrospective analysis was performed for 66,692 pa...

Blood pressure-lowering treatment for the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation: An individual participant data meta-analysis
ConclusionsIn this meta-analysis, we found that BP-lowering treatment reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events similarly in individuals with and without AF. Pharmacological BP lowering for prevention of cardiovascular events should be recommended in patients with AF.

Opportunistic screening for atrial fibrillation by clinical pharmacists in UK general practice during the influenza vaccination season: A cross-sectional feasibility study
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that AF screening performed by GP practice –based pharmacists was feasible, economically viable, and positively endorsed by participants. Furthermore, diagnosis of AF by the clinical pharmacist using anSLECG was more sensitive and more specific than the use of pulse palpation alone. Future research should explore the key barriers preventing the adoption of national screening programmes.

Association between temperature variability and daily hospital admissions for cause-specific cardiovascular disease in urban China: A national time-series study
ConclusionsOur findings suggested that short-term temperature variability exposure could increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, which may provide new insights into the health effects of climate change.

Fixed-dose combination antihypertensive medications, adherence, and clinical outcomes: A population-based retrospective cohort study
by Amol A. Verma, Wayne Khuu, Mina Tadrous, Tara Gomes, Muhammad M. Mamdani BackgroundThe majority of people with hypertension require more than one medication to achieve blood pressure control. Many patients are prescribed multipill antihypertensive regimens rather than single-pill fixed-dose combination (FDC) treatment. Although FDC use may improve medication adherence, the impact on patient outcomes is unclear. We compared clinical outcomes and medication adherence with FDC therapy versus multipill combination therapy in a real-world setting using linked clinical and administrative databases. Methods and findingsWe cond...

Validation of a genetic risk score for atrial fibrillation: A prospective multicenter cohort study
ConclusionsProspective assessment of a GRS for AF identified participants with elevated risk of AF beyond established clinical criteria. Accordingly, a GRS for AF could be incorporated into overall risk assessment to better identify patients at the highest risk of developing AF, although further testing in larger populations is needed to confirm these findings. Cardiovascular and Renal Outcomes of Renin–Angiotensin System Blockade in Adult Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review with Network Meta-Analyses
Conclusions In adults with diabetes, comparisons of different RAS blockers showed similar effects of ACE inhibitors and ARBs on major cardiovascular and renal outcomes. Compared with monotherapies, the combination of an ACE inhibitor and an ARB failed to provide significant benefits on major outcomes. Clinicians should discuss the balance between benefits, costs, and potential harms with individual diabetes patients before starting treatment. Review registration PROSPERO CRD42014014404

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality: A Decade-Long Historical Cohort Study
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between OSA-related variables and risk of CV events. Methods and Findings A historical cohort study was conducted using clinical database and health administrative data. Adults referred for suspected OSA who underwent diagnostic polysomnography at the sleep laboratory at St Michael's Hospital (Toronto, Canada) between 1994 and 2010 were followed through provincial health administrative data (Ontario, Canada) until May 2011 to examine the occurrence of a composite outcome (myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, revascularization procedures, or de...
