What Are the Complications of Sickle Cell Trait?
Discussion Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders where there are abnormal hemoglobin molecules and the red blood cells take on a characteristic sickled shape instead of a rounded shape. Sickled hemoglobin provides an evolutionary advantage of giving the individual increased protection against severe and cerebral malaria. The sickled shape doesn’t move through the vascular system as well and therefore is more likely to aggregate in small vessels causing an increased risk of vaso-occlusive disease, acute chest syndrome, splenic sequestration, and priapism. There is also an increased risk of ...

Off-pump CABG surgery in left main coronary artery disease: a single-center prospective registry
ConclusionsThis study shows that off-pump CABG surgery is safe in patients with LM CAD. There is low in-hospital mortality and MACE and 3-year outcomes are similar to the published data of LM CAD patients who undergo on-pump CABG.

COVID-19 Infected ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction in INDIA (COSTA INDIA)
CONCLUSIONS: In this large registry of STEMI patients, we did not find significant excess in in-hospital mortality among COVID-19 co-infected patients compared with non-infected patients despite lower rate of primary PCI and reperfusion treatment, though composite of in-hospital mortality, re-infarction, stroke and heart failure was higher.PMID:37230465 | PMC:PMC10204278 | DOI:10.1016/j.ihj.2023.05.009

Clinical characteristics, etiological profile, treatment and long term outcomes in patients with non ischemic systolic heart failure; Himachal Pradesh heart failure registry (HP-HF registry)
CONCLUSIONS: Patients of NISHF were middle-aged population with severely depressed LV systolic function with significant incident morbidity and mortality. Early detection of risk factors and their risk management and enhancing the use of guideline directed treatment may improve the outcomes.PMID:37003535 | DOI:10.1016/j.ihj.2023.03.007

Is Acute Ischemic Stroke Really Associated with Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction ? A Case-Control Study
Conclusions: Our study concluded that the prevalence of LVSD was the same in AIS patients and controls matched for age, sex, and AF prevalence, although the prevalence of LVSD was indeed higher in AIS patients without AF than in controls without AF.

Prognostic significance of Troponin I in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention
Indian Heart J. 2021 Nov-Dec;73(6):737-739. doi: 10.1016/j.ihj.2021.09.004. Epub 2021 Sep 14.ABSTRACTThis observational study investigates the prognostic significance of troponin I in patients undergoing primary percutaneous intervention (pPCI). Sequential cardiac biomarker sampling of the enrolled patients (n = 167) was performed on admission and at 6,12,24 and 48 h. Clinical characteristics, major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) (death, reinfarction, stroke and new or worsening heart failure) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were noted on admission and 30 day follow-up. A 24-h troponin I l...

Concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
AbstractThe Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Study (LAAOS III) was a multicenter, randomized controlled trial that included patients undergoing cardiac surgery who also had atrial fibrillation. The trial recruited 4811 participants, of which 2400 patients were randomized to undergo left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion surgery, while 2411 participants had isolated cardiac surgery. The aim of the study was to determine whether concomitant occlusion of the LAA prevents ischemic stroke or systemic embolism. The study also evaluated the efficacy and safety of concomitant LAA occlusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The...

Vascular procedures in patients with left ventricular assist devices: single-center experience
ConclusionPatients on LVAD support are a complex cohort with a high risk for perioperative complications. In a setting where device function and anticoagulation are monitored closely, vascular surgery in these patients is feasible with an acceptable perioperative risk.

One-year clinical outcome of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Insights from KERALA-AF registry
CONCLUSIONS: Despite high risk profile of patients in this registry, use of OAC was suboptimal, whereas antiplatelets were used in nearly half of patients. A relatively high rate of annual mortality and hospitalization was observed in patients with NVAF in Kerala AF Registry.PMID:33714410 | DOI:10.1016/j.ihj.2020.11.152
