Premature stroke and cardiovascular risk in primary Sj ögren's syndrome
CONCLUSION: Raynaud's phenomen as well as vasculitis and high ESSDAI have shown a significant association to CVD. PSS patients with cerebrovascular events were younger than expected. Knowledge about risk factors may help clinicians to identify pSS patients at risk for CVD. After diagnosis of pSS, patients should be screened for risk factors such as hypertension and receive appropriate therapy to prevent or at least reduce sequelae such as infarction. However, further investigations are necessary in order to achieve a reliable risk stratification for these patients.PMID:36588566 | PMC:PMC9794609 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.1048684

The NLRP3 Genetic Variant (rs10754555) Reduces the Risk of Adverse Outcome in Middle-Aged Patients with Chronic Coronary Syndrome
CONCLUSION: The age-related reduced risk of composite endpoint in rs10754555 G-allele carriers accompanied by diminished NLRP3 mRNA expression is hypothesis generating and needs to be further explored. The study is registered at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov, with identification number NCT00222261.PMID:36582742 | PMC:PMC9794420 | DOI:10.1155/2022/2366695

Cardiovascular Disease and Thrombosis in HIV Infection
Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2022 Dec 1. doi: 10.1161/ATVBAHA.122.318232. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHIV infection has transitioned from an acute, fatal disease to a chronic one managed by antiretroviral therapy. Thus, the aging population of people living with HIV (PLWH) continues to expand. HIV infection results in a dysregulated immune system, wherein CD4+ T cells are depleted, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, disrupting the gut epithelial barrier. Long-term HIV infection is associated with chronic inflammation through potentially direct mechanisms caused by viral replication or exposure to viral protein...

Predictive values of coronary artery calcium and arterial stiffness for long-term cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary artery disease
CONCLUSIONS: A CAC score ≥100 or a CAVI ≥ 9.0 predicts the long-term occurrence of MACEs in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients with stable CAD. These two noninvasive tests can be used as screening tools to guide treatment for the prevention of future CV events.PMID:36448219 | DOI:10.1002/clc.23955

Associations of clonal haematopoiesis with recurrent vascular events and death in patients with incident ischemic stroke
Blood. 2022 Nov 28:blood.2022017661. doi: 10.1182/blood.2022017661. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClonal hematopoiesis (CH) is common among older people and associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, inflammation, and shorter overall survival. Age and inflammation are major risk factors for ischemic stroke, yet the association of CH with risk of secondary vascular events and death is unknown. We investigated CH in peripheral blood DNA from 581 patients with first-ever ischemic stroke from the Prospective Cohort with Incident Stroke-Berlin study (PROSCIS-B) using error-corrected targeted sequencing. The primary c...

High Uric Acid Promotes Atherosclerotic Plaque Instability by Apoptosis Targeted Autophagy
CONCLUSION: HUA promoted atherosclerosis and exacerbated plaque vulnerability, and HUA facilitates foam cell apoptosis by inhibiting autophagy.PMID:36436875 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63645

Clinical Application of Serum microRNAs in Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Disease
J Clin Med. 2022 Nov 20;11(22):6849. doi: 10.3390/jcm11226849.ABSTRACTMicroRNAs (miRs) are promising diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic biomolecules for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerotic occlusive disease concerns a large population of patients, carrying the highest incidence of fatal and non-fatal adverse events, such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and limb ischemia, worldwide. Consistently, miRs are involved in regulation and pathogenesis of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD), acute coronary syndromes (ACS), both with ST-segment (STEMI) and non-ST segment elevation myocard...

Lipoprotein(a) predicts recurrent cardiovascular events in  patients with prior cardiovascular events post-PCI: five-year findings from a large single center cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Our present study confirmed that Lp(a) was an independent predictor for recurrent CVEs in patients with established CVEs, illustrating that Lp(a) level might be a valuable biomarker for risk stratification and prognostic assessment in this high-risk population.PMID:36414932 | DOI:10.1186/s12959-022-00424-9

Comparison of Investigator-Reported vs Centrally Adjudicated Major Adverse Cardiac Events: A Secondary Analysis of the COMPASS Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This secondary analysis of the COMPASS trial found that whether assessed by blinded site investigators or adjudicators, dual pathway inhibition significantly reduced CV events among patients with stable atherosclerotic disease compared with aspirin plus placebo. These findings suggest that using investigator-reported events in blinded clinical trials may be a more efficient alternative to adjudication.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01776424.PMID:36409491 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2022.43201

The epitranscriptome: RNA modifications in vascular remodelling
Atherosclerosis. 2022 Nov 9:S0021-9150(22)01500-3. doi: 10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.11.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRNA transcripts are not finished products. Like proteins undergo posttranslational modifications, RNAs undergo posttranscriptional modifications. Some of these modifications affect processing, stability or turnover of RNAs, others can 'edit' nucleotides, change the RNA's function and rewrite the genetic code. The body of RNA modifications is collectively called the 'epitranscriptome'. The epitranscriptome is dynamically regulated. This is the most clear for N6-methyladenosine (m6A), where both m6A-'w...
