Carotid Endarterectomy Versus Stenting for the Treatment of Patients With Carotid Artery Stenosis: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Cureus. 2023 Feb 16;15(2):e35070. doi: 10.7759/cureus.35070. eCollection 2023 Feb.ABSTRACTCarotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a surgical procedure that treats the narrowed carotid arteries, which may be narrowed by atherosclerosis. Stenting is the insertion of a wire mesh scaffold into the narrowed portion of the carotid artery to keep it open by preventing blood from clotting. Using the study done over 10 years back as a point of reference, this study will seek an update on an assessment comparing CEA and stenting in studies carried out between 2015 and to date. The PICOS (population, intervention, control, outcome, and study...

Complementary prognostic value of stress perfusion imaging and global coronary flow reserve derived from cardiovascular magnetic resonance: a long-term cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: During long-term follow-up, stress perfusion CMR and global CFR derived from CS flow measurement provided complementary prognostic value for prediction of cardiovascular events. Microvascular dysfunction or diffuse atherosclerosis as shown by impaired global CFR may play a role as important as that of ischemia due to epicardial coronary stenosis in the risk stratification of CAD patients.PMID:36927677 | PMC:PMC10018821 | DOI:10.1186/s12968-023-00930-3

The potential therapeutic impacts of trehalose on cardiovascular diseases as the environmental-influenced disorders: An overview of contemporary findings
Environ Res. 2023 Mar 14:115674. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.115674. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as environmental-influenced disorders, are a major concern and the leading cause of death worldwide. A range of therapeutic approaches has been proposed, including conventional and novel methods. Natural compounds offer a promising alternative for CVD treatment due to their ability to regulate molecular pathways with minimal adverse effects. Trehalose is natural compound and disaccharide with unique biological functions and cardio-protective properties. The cardio-protective effects of trehalose ...

Clonal Hematopoiesis and the Heart: a Toxic Relationship
Curr Oncol Rep. 2023 Mar 15. doi: 10.1007/s11912-023-01398-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) refers to the expansion of hematopoietic stem cell clones and their cellular progeny due to somatic mutations, mosaic chromosomal alterations (mCAs), or copy number variants which naturally accumulate with age. CH has been linked to increased risk of blood cancers, but CH has also been linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes.RECENT FINDINGS: A combination of clinical outcome studies and mouse models have offered strong evidence that CH mutations either correlate with or cause atheroscle...

Research on Hepatocyte Regulation of PCSK9-LDLR and Its Related Drug Targets
Chin J Integr Med. 2023 Mar 13. doi: 10.1007/s11655-023-3545-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe prevalence of hyperlipidemia has increased significantly due to genetic, dietary, nutritional and pharmacological factors, and has become one of the most common pathological conditions in humans. Hyperlipidemia can lead to a range of diseases such as atherosclerosis, stroke, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, diabetes, and kidney failure, etc. High circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is one of the causes of hyperlipidemia. LDL-C in the blood binds to LDL receptor (LDLR) and regulates cholesterol...

Detection and Imaging of Active Substances in Early Atherosclerotic Lesions using Fluorescent Probes
Chembiochem. 2023 Mar 10:e202300105. doi: 10.1002/cbic.202300105. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis (AS) is a vascular disease caused by chronic inflammation and lipids, which is the main cause of myocardial infarction, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerosis is often difficult to detect in early stages due to the absence of clinically significant vascular stenosis. This is not conducive to the early intervention and treatment of the disease. Over the past decade, researchers have developed various imaging methods for the detection and imaging of atherosclerosis. At the same time, more and mor...

Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonists Versus Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
Cardiol Res. 2023 Feb;14(1):12-21. doi: 10.14740/cr1459. Epub 2023 Feb 25.ABSTRACTBeyond improving hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in adults with type 2 diabetes, glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) have been approved for reducing risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) or multiple CV risk factors. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) also reduced the risk for the primary composite CV outcome in patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk for CV events. In the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and European Association of Study in Diabetes (EASD)...

The Complexity of Peripheral Arterial Disease and Coronary Artery Disease in Diabetic Patients: An Observational Study
CONCLUSIONS: Diabetic patients with more complex CAD had more complex PAD. In diabetic patients with CAD, those with worse glycemic control had higher SYNTAX scores and the higher the SYNTAX score, the lower the ABI.PMID:36896224 | PMC:PMC9990548 | DOI:10.14740/cr1463

Outcomes of endovascular repair of infrarenal penetrating aortic ulcers
Conclusions: According to this registry data, endovascular repair of PAU is technically feasible with acceptable perioperative outcomes, but further studies investigating mid- and long-term data are needed before invasive treatment of PAU disease in an elderly and comorbid patient population should be recommended.PMID:36880201 | DOI:10.1024/0301-1526/a001060

Circulating ketone bodies and cardiovascular outcomes: the MESA study
CONCLUSION: The study found that elevated endogenous KB in a healthy community-based population is associated with a higher rate of CVD and mortality. Ketone bodies could serve as a potential biomarker for cardiovascular risk assessment.PMID:36881667 | DOI:10.1093/eurheartj/ehad087

Deep-Learning for Epicardial Adipose Tissue Assessment With Computed  Tomography: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk Prediction
CONCLUSIONS: Automated assessment of EAT volume is possible in CCTA, including in patients who are technically challenging; it forms a powerful marker of metabolically unhealthy visceral obesity, which could be used for cardiovascular risk stratification.PMID:36881425 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcmg.2022.11.018

Features of gas exchange and metabolism of the brain during revascularization of the carotid arteries
Bratisl Lek Listy. 2023 Feb 28. doi: 10.4149/BLL_2023_054. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe relevance of the stated topic of scientific research is determined by the fact that stroke is still the most important medical and social problem both in the world as a whole and in the Republic of Kazakhstan in particular due to high rates of morbidity, mortality, and disability. In addition, cerebrovascular diseases occupy one of the leading places in the structure of morbidity, disability and mortality, second only to coronary heart disease in Kazakhstan as well as around the world. The purpose of this research work is to study ...
