The Sky's the Limit: Expanding Nursing's Contribution to Acute Stroke Science
Am J Crit Care. 2022 Jul 1;31(4):266-274. doi: 10.4037/ajcc2022109.ABSTRACTStroke is the number one cause of preventable disability in adults in the United States. Significant advances have occurred in medications and technology supporting rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment during the past 30 years, along with blurring of the lines of what traditionally constituted nursing or medical research. Ischemic stroke is a disease of vascular insufficiency that mirrors myocardial infarction more than any other neurologic diagnosis. My primary program of research is focused on exploration of methods to improve intracranial blood f...

One-Year Outcomes After Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) in the ROADSTER 2 TRIAL
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with high risk factors, TCAR yields high technical success with a low stroke and death rate at one year. Further comparative studies to CEA are warranted.PMID:35381327 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvs.2022.03.872

The epidemiology, mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in adult patients with HIV
This article discusses the complex interactions involving HIV infection, the novel and traditional risk factors for CVD, and the antiretroviral HIV therapies which can contribute to CVD in HIV-infected people. In addition, the treatment of HIV+ patients with acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiomyopathy/heart failure are discussed. Current recommended ART and their major side effects are summarized in table format. All medical personnel must be aware of the increasing incidence of CVD on the morbidity and mortality in HIV infected patients and must be watchful for the presence of CVD in their patients with HIV.PM...

Use of Prescription Medications With Cardiovascular Adverse Effects Among Older Adults in the United States
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this community-based cohort of older adults with no prior cardiovascular disease, the use of MACE medications was independently and consistently associated with an increased risk of such events in a dose-response fashion. Insights Into Platelet-Derived MicroRNAs in Cardiovascular and Oncologic Diseases: Potential Predictor and Therapeutic Target
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2022 Jun 9;9:879351. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2022.879351. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTNon-communicable diseases (NCDs), represented by cardiovascular diseases and cancer, have been the leading cause of death globally. Improvements in mortality from cardiovascular (CV) diseases (decrease of 14%/100,000, United States) or cancers (increase 7.5%/100,000, United States) seem unsatisfactory during the past two decades, and so the search for innovative and accurate biomarkers of early diagnosis and prevention, and novel treatment strategies is a valuable clinical and economic endeavor. Both tumors and cardiovascular...

Plain language summary of results from ORION-10 and ORION-11: Two studies to learn how well inclisiran works in people with high cholesterol
Future Cardiol. 2023 Jun 6. doi: 10.2217/fca-2022-0133. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWHAT IS THIS PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY ABOUT?: This is a summary of the article describing the results of the ORION-10 and ORION-11 studies, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2020. The studies included adult participants with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). ASCVD happens when the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other areas of the body are blocked by fatty build-up (plaque) causing a heart attack, stroke, or other problems. High levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (L...

Cardiovascular Effects of Cannabinoids
Cardiol Rev. 2023 Jun 29. doi: 10.1097/CRD.0000000000000566. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMarijuana is now one of the most widely used substances in the United States that has been rising in prevalence given increasing legalization and recreational and medical usage. Despite its widespread use, there have been increasing concerns regarding the cardiovascular safety of marijuana. Recent studies have found a link between marijuana use and the development of cardiovascular disease. Most notably, marijuana has been found to be associated with various cardiac complications, including atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, str...

Sestrin2 as a Potential Target in Hypertension
Diagnostics (Basel). 2023 Jul 14;13(14):2374. doi: 10.3390/diagnostics13142374.ABSTRACTHypertension is a highly complex, intricate condition affecting millions of individuals across the globe. Nearly half of adults in the United States are diagnosed with hypertension, with incident rates projected to rise over the next decade. Hypertension is a precursor to many cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease. This review describes the major processes contributing to the development of hypertension and how Sestrin2 (Sesn2), an antioxidative prot...
