Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Update on Screening, Diagnosis, and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Sep;108(3):249-258.ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common condition of pregnancy with increasing prevalence in the United States. GDM increases risks of complications, including operative delivery, hypertensive disorders, shoulder dystocia, fetal macrosomia, large-for-gestational-age infants, neonatal hypoglycemia, and neonatal respiratory distress. In patients who are overweight or obese, prepregnancy weight loss and lifestyle modifications during pregnancy may prevent GDM. First-trimester screening can identify preexisting diabetes and early-onset GDM for prompt implementation of g...

A hospital-based assessment of glycemic control and medication adherence in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Eastern Nepal
CONCLUSION: The majority of the diabetic patients had good glycemic control and medium MA. Patients taking regular fruit, being involved in daily jogging, having a shorter duration of drug therapy, and having good diabetic knowledge were identified as factors that affect both glycemic control and MA.PMID:37636174 | PMC:PMC10451609 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_90_23

Metformin derivatives - Researchers' Friends or Foes?
Biochem Pharmacol. 2023 Aug 15:115743. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2023.115743. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetformin has been used for ages to treat diabetes mellitus due to its safety profile and low cost. However, metformin has variable pharmacokinetics in patients, and due to its poor oral absorption, the therapeutic doses are relatively high, causing unpleasant gastrointestinal adverse effects. Therefore, novel derivatives of metformin have been synthesized during the past decades. Particularly, after the mid-2000s, when organic cation transporters were identified as the main metformin carriers, metformin derivatives have be...

HDL abnormalities in type 2 diabetes: Clinical implications
Atherosclerosis. 2023 Aug 3:117213. doi: 10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.117213. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) represents the primary cause of mortality among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). In this population, High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles exhibit abnormalities in number, composition, and function, culminating in diminished anti-atherosclerotic capabilities despite normal HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. Hyperglycemic conditions contribute to these alterations in HDL kinetics, composition, and function, causing T2DM patients' HDL particles to e...

Extensive therapeutic effects, underlying molecular mechanisms and disease treatment prediction of Metformin: a systematic review
Transl Res. 2023 Aug 9:S1931-5244(23)00130-5. doi: 10.1016/j.trsl.2023.08.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetformin, a first-line management for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, has been expansively employed and studied with results indicating its therapeutic potential extending beyond glycaemic control. Beyond its established role, this therapeutic drug demonstrates a broad spectrum of action encompassing over sixty disorders, encompassing metabolic conditions, inflammatory disorders, carcinomas, cardiovascular diseases, and cerebrovascular pathologies. There is clear evidence of metformin's action targeting specific nodes in...
