Risk factors for dementia in older intensive care unit (ICU) survivors
DISCUSSION: Future studies will need to examine whether interventions targeting post-ICU stroke and depression can lower dementia incidence in ICU survivors.HIGHLIGHTS: Risk factors for post-intensive care unit (ICU) dementia were distinct from those of Alzheimer's disease. Cardiovascular risk factors were not associated with dementia in older ICU survivors. Post-ICU stroke was associated with a higher risk of dementia in older ICU survivors. Post-ICU depression was associated with a higher risk of dementia in older ICU survivors.PMID:37589315 | DOI:10.1002/alz.13423

Prevalent stroke, age of its onset, and post-stroke lifestyle in relation to dementia: A prospective cohort study
DISCUSSION: Stroke onset in earlier life stage predicted a higher risk for dementia, but a favorable post-stroke lifestyle may protect against dementia.PMID:37157186 | DOI:10.1002/alz.13122

High cholesterol levels change the association of biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases with dementia risk: Findings from a population-based cohort
This study assessed whether in a population with comorbidity of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular disease (mixed pathology) the association of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light chain (NfL), and phosphorylated tau181 (p-tau181) with dementia risk varied depending on levels of total cholesterol and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 genotype.METHODS: Plasma biomarkers were measured using Simoa technology in 768 participants of a nested case-control study embedded within an ongoing population-based cohort. Logistic and spline regression models, and receiver operating characteristic curves were calculate...

Prevalence of neuropsychiatric conditions and cognitive impairment in two parallel, aging study cohorts from rural and urban India
DISCUSSION: Longitudinal assessment of these neuropsychiatric conditions, with parallel cognitive monitoring, will help identify their causal relationship with dementia.PMID:36573020 | DOI:10.1002/alz.12741

Multimorbidity burden and developmental trajectory in relation to later-life dementia: A prospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Both multimorbidity burden and its developmental trajectory were prospectively associated with risk of dementia.PMID:36427050 | DOI:10.1002/alz.12840

Global, regional, and national trends of dementia incidence and risk factors, 1990-2019: A Global Burden of Disease study
CONCLUSION: The declining incidence of dementia in some countries, despite growing prevalence, is encouraging and urges further investigation.PMID:36044376 | DOI:10.1002/alz.12764

Tube feeding in patients with dementia is associated with a longer palliative care unit stay
CONCLUSION: The present study showed that, in patients with an established diagnosis of dementia, TF is common and independently associated with a longer length of PCU stay. Nevertheless, the study was underpowered and the results deserve confirmation in larger studies.PMID:34971282 | DOI:10.1002/alz.052919
