Association of Plasma A β 42/40 Ratio and Late-Onset Epilepsy: Results From the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
DISCUSSION: A reduction in plasma Aβ42/Aβ40 is associated with an increased risk of subsequent epilepsy. Our observations provide a further validation of the link between Aβ, hyperexcitable states, and LOE.PMID:37541842 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207635

Sleep Architecture, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Cognitive Function in Adults
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study found that better sleep consolidation and the absence of OSA were associated with better global cognition over 5 years of follow-up. These findings suggest that the role of interventions to improve sleep for maintaining cognitive function requires investigation.PMID:37462968 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.25152

Association Between Acute Myocardial Infarction and Cognition
CONCLUSIONS: This cohort study using pooled data from 6 cohort studies found that incident MI was not associated with a decrease in global cognition, memory, or executive function at the time of the event compared with no MI but was associated with faster declines in global cognition, memory, and executive function over time. These findings suggest that prevention of MI may be important for long-term brain health.PMID:37252710 | DOI:10.1001/jamaneurol.2023.1331

Subclinical Vascular Composites Predict Clinical Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, and Dementia: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
CONCLUSIONS: Subclinical vascular composites of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis may be useful biomarkers to inform the vascular pathways contributing to events of CVD, CHD, stroke, and dementia.PMID:37205504 | PMC:PMC10187443 | DOI:10.1101/2023.05.01.23289364

Comparison of Parameters for Assessment of Carotid Stiffness and Their Association with Carotid Atherosclerosis in Rural Australian Adults: A Pilot Study
J Clin Med. 2023 Apr 18;12(8):2935. doi: 10.3390/jcm12082935.ABSTRACTCarotid stiffness has been associated with the development and progression of carotid artery disease and is an independent factor for stroke and dementia. There has also been a lack of comparison of different ultrasound-derived carotid stiffness parameters and their association with carotid atherosclerosis. This pilot study aimed to investigate the associations between carotid stiffness parameters (derived via ultrasound echo tracking) and the presence of carotid plaques in Australian rural adults. In cross-sectional analyses, we assessed forty-six subjec...

Association of abnormal p-wave parameters with brain mri morphology: the atherosclerosis risk in communities neurocognitive study (ARIC-NCS)
CONCLUSION: In this exploratory analysis of a US community-based cohort, ECG surrogates of atrial myopathy are associated with higher prevalence of brain infarcts and microhemorrhage, suggesting subclinical vascular brain injury as a possible mechanism underlying the association of atrial myopathy with dementia. Neuropsychological tests and prediction of dementia in association with the degree of carotid stenosis
This study constitutes a cross sectional analysis of the association between cognitive impairment defined by neuropsychological tests and carotid stenosis. The main objective was to compare the results of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R) with regard to the degree of carotid stenosis. The sample comprised 744 patients who underwent a carotid duplex ultrasound and cognitive function testing (by ACE-R and MMSE). A multivariable analysis of potential confounding factors was completed. The significance of the different number of positive (MMSE ≤ 27, ACE-R ≤ 88)...

Baseline Serum Biomarkers of Inflammation and Subsequent Visit-to-Visit Blood Pressure Variability: A Post-hoc Analysis of MESA
CONCLUSION: A higher level of serum IL-6 was associated with increased subsequent BPV in a large multiracial cohort. Further investigation is needed to better understand the relationship between chronic inflammation and BPV, as the causality of inflammatory markers in the blood pressure mechanism remains to be uncertain.PMID:36315490 | DOI:10.1093/ajh/hpac122

Association of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Pathologies With Scam Susceptibility in Older Adults
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Cerebrovascular pathologies, specifically cerebral infarcts, is linked with greater scam susceptibility in older adults, independent of common neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease. Future studies examining in vivo magnetic resonance imaging markers of cerebrovascular pathologies with scam susceptibility and related decision-making outcomes will be important.PMID:36315115 | DOI:10.1001/jamaneurol.2022.3711
