Effectiveness and Safety of Rivaroxaban by General Practitioners - A Multicenter, Prospective Study in Japanese Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation (GENERAL)
CONCLUSIONS: The low incidence of adverse events, including stroke/SE and bleeding, in patients prescribed rivaroxaban by general practitioners supports its use as a safe and efficacious treatment in the standard clinical care of high-risk patient populations.PMID:33814525 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-20-1244

Seasonal Variations in the Incidence of Ischemic Stroke, Extracranial and Intracranial Hemorrhage in Atrial Fibrillation Patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Significant seasonal variations were observed for IS, ECH, and ICH events in AF patients, and were consistently the highest in winter. A small peak of ECH was observed in summer, which seemed, in part, to be related to increased DOAC use. PMID: 32863288 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Age-Related Differences in the Clinical Characteristics and Treatment of Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in Japan - Insight From the ANAFIE (All Nippon AF In Elderly) Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Permanent/persistent AF, comorbidities, and cardiovascular and bleeding risk all increased significantly with age. Furthermore, use of warfarin and apixaban increased with age, accompanied by a decrease in other oral anticoagulant usage. PMID: 31969518 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Poor Quality of Warfarin Treatment Increases the Risk of All Types of Intracranial Hemorrhage in Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Poor control of warfarin treatment was associated with elevated risk of ICH. Approximately half of the ICH were traumatic, mainly subdural. PMID: 30686804 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Three-Year Clinical Outcomes Associated With Warfarin vs. Direct Oral Anticoagulant Use Among Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation - Findings From the SAKURA AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: A high follow-up rate allowed us to obtain reliable data on the status of OAC use and therapeutic outcomes among AF patients in Japan. Warfarin and DOACs appear to yield equivalent 3-year stroke and all-cause mortality rates, but DOACs appear to reduce the risk of major bleeding. PMID: 30078823 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Two-Year Outcomes of Anticoagulation for Acute Ischemic Stroke With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation - SAMURAI-NVAF Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke/TIA patients receiving DOACs for secondary prevention were younger and had lower stroke severity and risk indices than those receiving warfarin. Estimated cumulative incidences of stroke and systemic embolism within 2 years were similar between warfarin and DOACs users, but those of death and intracranial hemorrhage were significantly lower among DOAC users. Current Status and Outcomes of Direct Oral Anticoagulant Use in Real-World Atrial Fibrillation Patients - Fushimi AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world clinical practice, there were no significant differences in stroke/SE events or major bleeding events for DOAC compared with warfarin in patients with AF. PMID: 28428449 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Edoxaban vs. Warfarin in East Asian Patients With Atrial Fibrillation - An ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 Subanalysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Once-daily edoxaban provided similar efficacy to warfarin while reducing major bleeding risk in the East Asian population. PMID: 26888149 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Nine-Year Trend of Anticoagulation Use, Thromboembolic Events, and Major Bleeding in Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - Shinken Database Analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The 9-year trend of stroke prevention indicated a steady increase of OAC prescription and a partial improvement of TE and MB. Even in the era of DOAC, TE prevention was insufficient in high-risk patients, and DOAC were associated with increased extracranial bleeding. PMID: 26794283 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Regional Differences in Asia on Efficacy and Safety of Edoxaban Compared With Warfarin - Insights From the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: HDE had a greater relative efficacy and safety in EA compared with Japan that was only partially explained by differences in baseline characteristics and TTR. PMID: 26460886 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficacy and Safety of Dabigatran Etexilate vs. Warfarin in Asian RE-LY Patients According to Baseline Renal Function or CHADS2 Score.
CONCLUSIONS: Bleeding and stroke rates in Asian patients varied according to renal function and CHADS2score, but the relative benefits of DE over warfarin were preserved when analyzed by subcategories. PMID: 26248573 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Efficacy and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants vs. Warfarin in Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusions:NOAC are more efficacious than warfarin for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in Japanese patients with NVAF. The present findings offer clinicians a more comprehensive picture of NOAC as a therapeutic option to reduce the risk of stroke in Japanese NVAF patients. Impact of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants on Intracranial Bleeding in Asian Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
Abstract The incidence of intracranial bleeding is known to be markedly higher in Japan and other East Asian countries than in countries outside of East Asia. Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have much lower risk of intracranial bleeding than warfarin, so we reviewed the effect of this class of drugs on intracranial bleeding in Asian patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Warfarin therapy in Asian or East Asian populations appears to be associated with lower efficacy, poorer safety and a much greater risk of intracranial bleeding when compared with non-Asian or non-East Asian gr...

Inappropriate Use of Oral Anticoagulants for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusions:The Fushimi AF Registry provides a unique snapshot of current AF management in an urban community in Japan. The present study reveals inappropriate use of OAC for patients with AF, indicating discordance between guideline recommendations and real-world clinical practice.
