Brain injury research to focus on moderate concussion
(University of California - Riverside) Viji Santhakumar at the University of California, Riverside, has received funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disaster and Stroke to further pursue research on moderate concussive brain injury, which results from car accidents or sports-related concussions. The more than $2.3 million five-year renewal grant will allow Santhakumar's lab to study how inflammatory responses after brain injury contribute to the creation of abnormally connected neurons, and whether this compromises critical memory processing functions.

NeuroTrauma Sciences and Henry Ford Health System to develop exosome technology
(Henry Ford Health System) NeuroTrauma Sciences, LLC (NTS), a biopharmaceutical company, and Henry Ford Health System, a non-profit organization, today announce that a newly-formed subsidiary of NTS has entered into multi-year Sponsored Research and License Agreements. The new company is named NeurExo Sciences, LLC (NXS) and its goal is to advance Henry Ford's pioneering technology involving exosomes as extracellular vesicles enriched with microRNA for the purpose of treating stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) including concussion, and neuropathies.

Study reveals gaps in follow-up care after concussion
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Being discharged from a hospital trauma center after receiving treatment for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) does not necessarily mean that a patient has fully recovered. TBI can lead to long-lasting physical and cognitive symptoms, but a new study in JAMA Network Open suggests that many patients may not be receiving follow-up care.

Study finds worsening outcomes in service members 5 years after mild blast-induced concussion
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) According to a new study in JAMA Neurology, US military service members who endured a mild concussion after blast injury while deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan may continue to experience mental health symptoms as well as decreases in quality of life for at least five years after their injury. The study was supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Department of Defense. NINDS is part of the National Institutes of Health.
