Associations between severe and notifiable respiratory infections during the first trimester of pregnancy and congenital anomalies at birth: a register-based cohort study
CONCLUSION: This large population-based study found severe acute respiratory infection in first trimester of pregnancy was associated with a higher risk of selected major cardiovascular anomalies in babies. These findings support measures to prevent acute respiratory infections in pregnant women including through vaccination.PMID:36964492 | PMC:PMC10037767 | DOI:10.1186/s12884-023-05514-8

Herpes Simplex Virus and Varicella Zoster Virus Infections in Cancer Patients
Viruses. 2023 Feb 5;15(2):439. doi: 10.3390/v15020439.ABSTRACTHerpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are alpha herpesviruses that establish life-long latent infection in neuronal ganglia after primary infection. Periodic reactivation of these viruses results in recurrent infections that can have significant impact on patients' quality of life. HSV commonly causes oral and genital mucocutaneous infections whereas VZV is responsible for varicella/chickenpox and herpes zoster/shingles, but cancer patients are at particularly higher risk of complications including disseminated and visceral infections due t...

COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination, and Human Herpesviruses Infections
Vaccines (Basel). 2023 Jan 20;11(2):232. doi: 10.3390/vaccines11020232.ABSTRACTThere are several human herpesviruses. A common characteristic of infection by these viruses is latency, by which the virus assumes a non-replicative state, subverting the attentions of the host's immune response. In immunocompetent hosts, herpesviruses are immunologically controlled, although periodic virus shedding can occur. In situations where immunological control is lost, herpesviruses can reactivate and produce clinically apparent disease. It is now becoming apparent that COVID-19 or exposure to COVID-19 vaccines can exert several effects...

COVID-19 infection and vaccines: potential triggers of Herpesviridae reactivation
An Bras Dermatol. 2023 Feb 10:S0365-0596(23)00023-5. doi: 10.1016/j.abd.2022.09.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, numerous articles have highlighted a possible link between COVID-19 vaccination or infection and Herpesviridae co-infection or reactivation. The authors conducted an exhaustive literature review on this topic, the results of which are presented individually for each member of the Herpesviridae family: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) types-1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2); Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV); Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV); Cytomegalovirus (CMV); HHV-6; HHV-7; and HHV-8. These hu...

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome: An Introduction, Signs and Symptoms, and Treatment
This article discusses the etiology, epidemiology, and pathology of Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Clinically it may be presented as a vesicular rash on the ear or even in the mouth, pain in the ear, and facial paralysis. Some other rare symptoms may also be present, which are also discussed in this article. Skin involvement is also seen in some cases as patterns due to anastomoses between cervical and cranial nerves. This article provides an overview of how the varicella-zoster virus causes facial paralysis and other neurological symptoms. Knowing about this condition and its clinical features is essential to make an early diagnos...

Herpetic Eye Disease After SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination: A CDC-VAERS Database Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The low crude reporting rate suggests that HZO and HSO after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination occur rarely. This study provides insights into the possible temporal association between reported HSO and HZO after SARS-CoV-2 vaccines; however, further investigations are required to delineate the possible underlying immunological mechanisms.PMID:36706232 | DOI:10.1097/ICO.0000000000003246
