Living without eosinophils: evidence from mouse and man
The enduring view of eosinophils, as immune effector cells whose primary function is host defence against infection by helminths and other microbial pathogens, sets the stage for a fundamental question regarding the safety of therapeutic eosinophil depletion. If eosinophils are significantly reduced or altogether depleted in an effort to alleviate the negative effects of tissue eosinophilia and eosinophilic inflammation in conditions such as asthma, COPD, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis and hypereosinophilic syndrome, would these patients become susceptible to infecti...

Onset, Maintenance, and Durability of Response with Dupilumab in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps
Conclusion: By W16, more dupilumab than pbo pts achieved clinically relevant response (onset), with the response maintained at W52 in >82% of dupilumab pts.

Multidisciplinary checklist approach for the 'severe phenotype: Asthma with Nasal Polyps
Asthma with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) associates with higher burden and more difficult treatment.Aim: To propose an evidence-based data checklist for a coordinated management of these patients.A multidisciplinary team of ENT physicians, allergologists, pneumologists and hospital pharmacist aimed to develop a checklist for the assessment of patients, based on the diagnostic definition, and the control and severity criteria establish in guidelines such GINA, ARIA, EPOS, and international consensus on biologic therapies for CRSwNP and Asthma from EUFOREA and from EAACI, and a multidisciplinary consensu...

Transcriptomic analysis of cellular senescence signatures in severe asthma
Conclusions: Cellular senescence may be involved in the pathophysiology of severe asthma, particularly in patients with comorbid nasal polyps. Further studies are warranted to validate the causal relationships.

Type 2 biomarker expression according to age of asthma onset: an analysis of the German severe asthma registry (GAN)
Conclusion: Severe adult-onset asthma is characterised by a stronger expression of type 2 biomarkers than severe early-onset asthma.

Association between Staphylococcal Enterotoxin (SE)-specific IgE and specific IgE for house dust mites (HDM) in Brazilian patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP).
SE are a group of superantigens formerly associated with several respiratory diseases, including asthma, rhinitis and CRSwNP. Superantigens trigger the production of high specific IgE levels and are usually related to high levels of total IgE (tIgE) and eosinophilic inflammation. We aim to evaluate the correlation between the positivity of SE-specific IgE for A; B; C; TSST-1; tIgE and specific IgE for D. pteronyssinus (DP); D. farinae (DF) and B. tropicalis (BT) in CRSwNP Brazilian patients.36 CSRwNP patients, defined by 2012-EPOS (European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis) criteria, submitted to nasal endoscopy and CT...

Severe asthma concomitant with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and non-steroid exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD) successfully treated with mepolizumab: A case report
Tuberk Toraks. 2022 Jun;70(2):215-219. doi: 10.5578/tt.20229815.ABSTRACTAllergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a lung disease characterized by a hypersensitivity reaction to Aspergillus fumigatus. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is characterized by increased serum IgE levels, peripheral blood eosinophilia and radiographic pulmonary infiltrates, central bronchiectasis, and mucus plugs. Mepolizumab, a monoclonal interleukin (IL)-5 antibody, reduces eosinophilic inflammation and improves symptom control in severe eosinophilic asthma. A 74-year-old male patient arrived at our allergy outpatient clinic compla...
