Brain tumor invasion along blood vessels may lead to new cancer treatments
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Invading glioblastoma cells may hijack cerebral blood vessels during early stages of disease progression and damage the brain's protective barrier, a study in mice indicates. Scientists thought hematopoietic stem cells stayed in the bone marrow but recent research has revealed that they travel to the problem site: to the heart if a heart attack is in progress, or to the brain in the case of a stroke. Jennifer Gillette, Ph.D., will study why these cells leave the bone marrow and what they do when they reach their target.
