Dartmouth College Student Says Winston, First Dog Positive For Coronavirus, Is ‘ Completely Fine ’
BOSTON (CBS) – A Dartmouth College student said he and his family were as surprised as anyone when their pug Winston became the first known dog to test positive for coronavirus. Ben McLean returned home to North Carolina March 10, and remained there after Dartmouth was among the colleges switching to close its campus and shift to remote learning as a result of the pandemic. McLean’s father, a doctor working at UNC Medical Center’s COVID-19 emergency room, became sick in mid-March and later tested positive for coronavirus. McLean’s mother tested positive as well, and though the Dartmouth College student himself was ...

How Can I Prevent Coronavirus? Should I Wear A Mask? And Other Questions
BOSTON (CBS) – The Centers for Disease control has cautioned that, based on current patterns, coronavirus is likely to become a global pandemic. With no approved vaccine or medication to treat it, that could ultimately result in overloaded healthcare systems. What is a pandemic? Simply put, a pandemic is a global, widespread outbreak of a new illness. Because it is new, people don’t have the ability to fight it and can be easily infected. The last pandemic to widely affect the United States was H1N1 flu in 2009. The worst pandemic in history was the Spanish flu outbreak in 1918 which killed 50 million people worldw...

Last week a student from White Mountain School in Bethlehem went to the emergency room at Littleton Regional Healthcare with mild flu-like symptoms. The student had traveled to Hunan and returned to the U.S. on January 6. Both people have fully recovered from their symptoms. Samples from the patients were sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing. “We are pleased the patients are doing well,” said New Hampshire Gov. Chris ...

Is Our Academic System Ready for a New Coronavirus Normal?
Credit: Pîxabay.By Esther Ngumbi and Brian LovettILLINOIS, United States, Mar 11 2020 (IPS) Institutions of higher education have a responsibility to lead by example and to provide current, high-quality information to the people and communities that support them. This responsibility is no clearer than during a public health and information crisis like the one presented by this novel coronavirus. State and local governments in particular should be able to rely on Universities for guidance on protective evidence-based precautionary measures, whether it’s cancelling events, closing schools or formulating public health post...

Northeastern Researcher Helps CDC Predict Coronavirus Spread With Mapping Technology
BOSTON (CBS) — Allesandro Vespugnani points to a computerized map with red dots slowly filling up certain cities. The Center for Disease Control’s dire warning about the spread of the coronavirus is partly based on Vespugnani’s work in Boston. “You see that the epidemic is expanding now,” he said, moving his finger from China to Europe. “You see that area start to light up?” He pointed to New York City. “New York has a larger risk because the traveling flow is large. You see Boston too.” He’s a Northeastern University researcher whose mapping technology predicts the spread of infectious diseases lik...
