Government must ensure coronavirus sick pay for all workers, says UNISON
The government must take emergency action to guarantee all staff statutory sick pay as soon as they self-isolate because of coronavirus fears, says UNISON today (Monday). General secretary Dave Prentis has written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Thérèse Coffey asking her to amend the rules so employers have to recognise the time off as sick leave and provide wages for workers from day one. They must also pay them regardless of how much they earn or their type of job contract, he says. It comes amid concerns that zero-hours staff who should be self-isolating will go into work out of fear they will be denie...

No Cobra meetings, no sombre speeches from No 10, yet the consequences of runaway global heating are catastrophicIt is a global emergency that has already killed on a mass scale and threatens to send millions more to early graves. As its effects spread, it could destabilise entire economies and overwhelm poorer countries lacking resources and infrastructure. But this is the climate crisis, not the coronavirus. Governments are not assembling emergency national plans and you ’re not getting push notifications transmitted to your phone breathlessly alerting you to dramatic twists and developments from South Korea to Italy.M...

Why is the government relying on nudge theory to fight coronavirus? | Tony Yates
It would be good to know the evidence for the UK strategy – which is starkly different to that of other countriesWith an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 coronavirus casesnow present in the UK, the government has eschewed social distancing measures such as closing schools and banning largesporting events. Instead, it has opted for behavioural “nudges”: wash your hands, don’t touch your face, don’t shake hands with others, stay at home if you feel ill, and self-isolate if you have a continuous cough. This approach differs starkly from the quarantine measures taken in China, South Korea, Italy and Iran. But it also marks t...
