Wilding our gardens with Seedball
A nice big package has arrived from the lovely people at Seedball. As I mentioned previously I am hoping to wild two patches of our front and back gardens to provide a couple of localised ecosystems for invertebrates, such as bees, butterflies, and moths and also to invest in those for the sake of the bats and birds. Indeed, the various mixes that have arrived after discussions with Seedball are their bee mix, butterfly mix, shade mix, and a bat mix. Each has a wonderful mix wildflower seeds in their clay seed ball system that one simply spreads over the surface of a roughly prepared patch of soil (or in tubs). The balls h...

Is bee venom a good anti-aging ingredient? Episode 163
Is bee venom a good anti-aging ingredient? Monika asks…Korean Bee Venom essence but it does seem to work. My question is the bee venom really magic or is there something else that removes the spots? RS: Thanks Monika…this gives me the perfect excuse time to remind listeners to go back to Episode 105 and listen to the story about how Perry got stung in the eye by a bee. If nothing else, just go the webpage and check out the picture of his face. It’s horrific. I’m not kidding. But let’s put my personal revulsion aside and try to figure out why this product seemed to work on Monika’s acne. PR: We found a study pub...

"A new breed of diva has appeared on New York's #opera scene. These stars were raised humbly in Pennsylvania on pop and country-western music, but the limelight has already gotten to them. Not only did they need a whole new dressing room, but it also had to be soundproofed and kept fully stocked with grain and a hay mixture of timothy, orchard grass and red clover. The scene-stealers in question are the 100 sheep that appear in "De Materie," a Dutch avant-garde work being performed at the @parkavearmory. While the #sheep are garnering great reviews — our critic Anthony Tommasini wrote that "their occasional bleating lent...

Are ceramides good anti-aging ingredients? Episode 77
This study was done on mice.) A Japanese study shows that plant-derived ceramides improve skin moisture better than a placebo. The Kao Corporation published a study showing that a cream containing 8% of Ceramide E improves water content of skin and symptoms of atopic dermatitis. But, ceramide cream wasn’t compared to any other product. So the test had no control and it wasn’t blinded. By the way, this 8% concentration shows up in a couple of studies and it’s MUCH higher than the typical use level of ceramides which is a few tenths of a percent. According to the Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology, certain ceramide combi...

What a paean from Ben Goldacre can do
After an interchange on Twitter about how blogs get noticed, I commented that the best thing for me was being thrown off the UCL web site by Malcolm Grant, and the subsequent support that I got from Ben Goldacre. I am a big fan of just about everything that Goldacre has done. So are a lot of other people and his support was crucial. When I looked up his 2007 post, I found a lot of links were now broken, and some characters didn’t render properly. So, as a matter of historical record, I’m reproducing the whole post with updated links where possible. Goldacre’s comments, of course, greatly exaggerated my v...

Does “Silver/Purple” Shampoo Really Cancel Brassy Colors?
Makeup At Midnight says…Ever since I’ve been dying my hair blonde, I’ve been told by many people to treat my hair with a “purple/silver” toning shampoo or conditioner every few days to help prevent my hair from getting a brassy tone to it. Supposedly, this works by ‘color theory’ in the way that the purple toner in the shampoo is able to cancel out the brassy yellow colors in the hair. An example of such a product is the AG Sterling Silver line, one that I’ve been using myself (although I’m still skeptical). My question is, does these types of products actually work to ...
