Woman's wisdom teeth operation left her in agony for SIX YEARS
Carol Russell, 46, from Birmingham, had a wisdom tooth removed in 2008, and the operations damaged a nerve so badly she needed several more operations. They made no difference. She was told the damage was permanent. She has since has received £15,000 from South Birmingham Primary Care Trust after the Dental Law Partnership negotiated an out- of-court settlement. One year on, new commissioning groups are an improvement on their predecessors but do not reflect the views of members, say GPs
1 Apr 2014 Less than half of GPs feel decisions made by clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), the doctor-led bodies created by the NHS reforms to hold local health budgets, reflect their views, suggests a survey by the Nuffield Trust and The King’s Fund. However, the research also suggests that three times as many GPs think they can influence the work of their CCG than could influence their predecessors – primary care trusts. The research published today on the anniversary of the enactment of the NHS reforms, provides the top-line results from a survey of GPs in six CCG locali...

Registering as an 'out of area' patient in the UK popular with young commuters and patients moving home
A pilot scheme allowing patients to visit GPs outside the area they live in was most popular among younger commuters and people who had moved house but did not want to change their GP, according to a new report by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The Department of Health's Choice of GP pilot scheme found that while demand overall was modest, participants were generally positive about the scheme and there was little sign of major increased cost to primary care trusts (PCTs) for providing the service. PCTs: forgotten forever?
End Game firmly believes that just because primary care trusts were bloodily sacrificed on the altar of clinical commissioning that doesn’t mean they should be forgotten. So we put in a Freedom of Information request to the Department of Health asking how PCTs performed on their final year of quality, innovation productivity and prevention savings. QIPP has always been centrally reported, so we thought the department would probably have a fairly good idea of how they got on.Nope! (Source: HSJ)

Conflicting opinions among CCG leaders and GP members over who 'owns' new commissioning groups, report suggests
22 Jul 2013 New research into the early development of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), a cornerstone of the coalition government's NHS reforms, suggests that many GPs do not currently have a strong sense of ownership of their local CCGs.A distinctive feature of the 211 CCGs that took over responsibility for the majority of the budget for commissioning health care services in the English NHS from 1 April 2013 is that they are membership organisations designed to harness the clinical expertise of their local GP members. Handing greater control of budgets to GPs was a key element of...
