Methods of Immobilization after Achilles Tendon Rupture Repair: A Comparative Study in Rat Model
CONCLUSION: K-wire has better stability, lower complication rate than other methods. Immobilization with K-wire may be a promising tool in future clinical Achilles tendon rupture applications.PMID:37712211 | DOI:10.1111/os.13860 (Source: Hand Surgery)

News at a glance: RSV vaccine, scientific advisory panels, and a biodiversity hot spot at risk
In Focus The nervous system of a juvenile bat star ( Patiria miniata ) is highlighted in the first place image in Olympus’s annual competition in life science light microscopy. Laurent Formery of the University of California, Berkeley, recorded the image after staining the animal, about 1 centimeter wide, using an antibody that binds to acetylated microtubules, structures that govern the growth of neurons. Images of echinoderms and other marine invertebrates “help communicate how much beauty we have in our oceans,” Formery says, “and why it is important to know more about...

How did Pompeii ’s victims really die?
The destruction of Pompeii, Italy, is one of the most well-preserved catastrophes in human history. But scientists still disagree on how exactly thousands of Roman people died during those two fateful days in 79 C.E. For decades, many experts thought they asphyxiated amid the massive clouds of ash belched from the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. A study published today in PLOS ONE —based on the most detailed analysis yet of bones at the site—...

Comparison of plaster cast and open reduction internal fixation in delayed fourth and fifth carpometacarpal fracture-dislocations
CONCLUSION: The non-bridging dorsal buttress plate technique with or without a Kirschner wire is effective in patients with delayed ulnar CMC fracture-dislocations. Although surgery is associated with longer time to return to work, long-term results obtained with anatomical reduction of the joint are satisfactory for manual workers.PMID:37462634 | DOI:10.52312/jdrs.2023.851 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Conservative treatment of distal radial fractures
Oper Orthop Traumatol. 2023 Jul 5. doi: 10.1007/s00064-023-00820-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Distal fracture of the radius is common in all age groups. Under careful consideration of individual indications and contraindications, conservative treatment with reduction and immobilization can have significant advantages over the frequently applied surgical approach, particularly in older patients.THERAPEUTIC GOAL: Immobilization after closed reduction enables satisfactory wrist function to be achieved according to individual patient expectations.INDICATIONS: A. Patients with a. significant comorbidities, b. hig...
