Traditional Atriopulmonary Connection Fontan with Excellent Outcome for 32 Years
We report a 37-year-old male who underwent traditional Fontan 32 years ago with the diagnosis of L-transposition of great arteries, subvalvular pulmonary stenosis and cardiac dextroversion. Among the recent CTA, electroconvulsive therapy, catheterization and angiography, pulsatile PA, uniform pulmonary blood, normal PA pressure and resistance were observed in this patient. The traditional RA–PA Fontan may be an alternative surgical procedure. [...] Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals: Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  open access ...

Giant Intramural Right Ventricular Hematoma after PCI in a Patient with Condition after CABG
THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2020; 09: e11-e14 DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1703006Coronary artery perforation secondary to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a rare, but a potentially life-threatening complication. There is a misconception that cardiac tamponade rarely occurs in patients with prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We first describe a giant right ventricular intramural hematoma following PCI via a saphenous vein graft to treat a distal stenosis of the right coronary artery, and its successful treatment with redo cardiac surgery. Complex elective PCIs on patients after CABG should be performed in spec...

Coronary Artery Fistula Unmasking the Absence of Left Pulmonary Artery in an Adult
THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2020; 09: e9-e10 DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1702212Coronary artery fistulae are an incidental finding in patients undergoing coronary angiography or computed tomography (CT) coronary angiography. A 60-year-old man with known coronary artery disease presented with dyspnea. Coronary angiography revealed a large fistula arising from the circumflex artery (CX) without a clear intrathoracic target vessel or chamber in the heart. CT angiography revealed the agenesis of the left pulmonary artery. The fistula arising from the CX ensured left lung tissue supply. Unilateral absence of a pulmonary artery is an ex...

A Case of Inferior Vena Cava Thrombosis Induced by Left Iliac Vein Stents
THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2018; 07: e39-e42 DOI: 10.1055/s-0038-1672212Stents have been widely used to restore the patency of the iliac vein in the treatment of its obstruction. However, various complications related to those stents have been reported. This case report covers a 67-year-old male who was diagnosed with left iliofemoral venous post-thrombotic syndrome with recurrent acute deep venous thrombosis. Thrombosis of the inferior vena cava was induced by pronounced extension of left iliac vein stents. Extending stents in this way covers the outlet of the contralateral common iliac vein and may induce thrombosis in ...

Cardiac Graft from Donors with Extracorporeal Support —A Report of Two Cases
THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2018; 07: e33-e34 DOI: 10.1055/s-0038-1661410The persistent global shortage of organ donors is still a major limitation for transplantation. Experiences of heart transplantation from donors with extracorporeal support are rare. Here, we report from two cases of donors who were supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to acute circulatory failure. In both cases, the direct postoperative course was uneventful and free from major complications. The patients were discharged to a rehabilitation clinic. Our experience suggests that the use of heart organ from carefully selected donors with...

THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2018; 07: e21-e23 DOI: 10.1055/s-0038-1660833Anastomotic leakage of the gastric conduit following surgical treatment of esophageal cancer is a life-threatening complication. An important risk factor associated with anastomotic leakage is calcification of the supplying arteries of the gastric conduit. The patency of calcified splanchnic arteries cannot be assessed on routine computed tomography (CT) scans for esophageal cancer and, as such, in selected patients with known or assumed mesenteric artery disease, additional CT angiography of the abdominal arteries with 1 mm slices is strongly ...

A Short Report on Single Stage Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement and Carotid Stenting
THORAC CARDIOV SURG Reports 2017; 06: e37-e39 DOI: 10.1055/s-0037-1608887No consensus exists on the timing, safety, and efficacy of treating severe symptomatic aortic and carotid stenosis. In the older population and in the presence of multiple comorbidities that arise during the surgery, a less invasive transcatheter treatment may be the only reasonable option. We discuss this topic by analyzing a case of an 84-year-old man who underwent a combined single-stage transcatheter procedure.
