Ultrasound-guided injection and aspiration of small joints: techniques, pearls, and pitfalls
This article demonstrates the various approaches to diagnostic or therapeutic injection and aspiration of small joints with the aid of US images, cines and graphic illustrations, emphasizing joint positioning, anatomic landmarks, and needle trajectory for a safe and efficacious procedure. A brief review of available literature for each joint will also be provided. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)

Evaluation of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in osteosarcoma using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI: development and external validation of a model
ConclusionIn this study, a relative wash-in rate of<2.3 determined with the whole slab segmentation method predicted histological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in osteosarcoma. Consistent performance was observed in an external test cohort. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)

Much lower prevalence and severity of spine degenerative changes among older Chinese women than among older Caucasian women and its implication for the interpretation of lumbar spine BMD T-score for Chinese women
AbstractThe prevalence and severity of spine degenerative changes have been noted to be lower among older Chinese women than among older Caucasian women. Spine degenerative changes associated with marginal osteophytosis, trabecular thickening, subchondral sclerosis, facet joint arthrosis, and disc space narrowing can all lead to artificially higher spine areal bone mineral density (BMD). The lower prevalence and severity of spine degeneration have important implications for the interpretation of spine areal BMD reading for Chinese women. With fewer contributions from spine degenerative changes, following natural aging, the...

The distal tibiofibular joint effusion may be a reliable index for diagnosing the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis instability in ankle
ConclusionsOur research translated a complicated string of MRI multi-dimensional spatial measurements into a simple measuring process, and established the significance of quantifying DTJE in the diagnosis of DTSI. We found that the 8-mm height of DTJE was a more specific indicator for DTSI and could serve as a novel MRI diagnostic cutoff in clinical practice. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)

Pediatric primary lymphoma of bone in epiphysis case report
We report a pediatric case of PLB in the tibial epiphysis which presented initially with knee pain. Imaging was performed with X-ray, MRI, CT, and PET-CT with bone biopsies revealing diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. This patient also showed a second, synchronous lesion in the left iliac bone, which was also biopsy proven to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Lymphoma in the epiphysis for children is rare and often confused with infectious etiologies or other types of tumors. Misdiagnosis may result in inappropriate treatment and possible progression of the disease, thus making early identification important to initiate therapy. ...

Characterizing focal muscle signal on MRI in flexor-pronator muscles ’ status post ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction
ConclusionHigh signal which is commonly seen at the flexor pronator mass in patient status most UCL reconstruction of the elbow is secondary to the palmaris longus harvest rather than other etiologies such as muscle strain, retear, or trauma. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)

Ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation for adhesive capsulitis: capsule-preserving versus capsule-rupturing technique
ConclusionGHJ hydrodilatation results in pain elimination and functional improvement till the mid-term in patients with AC, with improved outcome when adopting the capsule-preserving compared to the capsule-rupturing technique. Higher initial DASH score is predictive of impaired functionality in the mid-term. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)

Rhabdomyolysis: a review of imaging features across modalities
AbstractThis review illustrates the imaging features of rhabdomyolysis across multiple modalities and in a variety of clinical scenarios. Rhabdomyolysis is the rapid breakdown of striated muscle following severe or prolonged insult resulting in the release of myocyte constituents into circulation. In turn, patients develop characteristically elevated serum creatine kinase, positive urine myoglobin, and other serum and urine laboratory derangements. While there is a spectrum of clinical symptoms, the classic presentation has been described as muscular pain, weakness, and dark urine. This triad, however, is only seen in abou...

Effectiveness of single intra-bursal injection of platelet-rich plasma against corticosteroid under ultrasonography guidance for shoulder impingement syndrome: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionPRP and triamcinolone in the SASD bursa could be considered as safe treatment options for SIS under ultrasonography guidance. While triamcinolone was effective in short-term pain reduction, PRP was effective in long-term improvement in shoulder abduction. (Source: Skeletal Radiology)
