[Life Story Work in Foster Care - Results from an Expert Survey in Germany and Great Britain].
This article presents the results of an exploratory study on the current practice of life story work in the German foster care system. As life story work with foster and adopted children has a long tradition in the UK, both German and British experts were interviewed. The comparative analysis showed that life story work in the German foster care system is characterized by a rather heterogeneous practice and is considerably less established than in Great Britain. From the point of view of the German experts surveyed, several improvements make sense, such as the introduction of quality standards for life story work and manda...

[Childhood Maltreatment and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury - the Impact of Emotion Regulation].
Authors: Haid-Stecher N, Sevecke K Abstract Childhood Maltreatment and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury - the Impact of Emotion Regulation Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common phenomenon in adolescence. Furthermore, it is often associated with maltreatment during childhood. One factor determining the relation between childhood maltreatment and NSSI is maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. The current study examines this relation in adolescent psychiatric inpatients (n = 97). Adolescents engaging in NSSI present maladaptive strategies in emotion regulation more frequently. In addition, they experienced maltreatm...

[Shame and Compassion: Potential Mechanisms Behind Bullying and Depressive Symptoms].
In this study it is analyzed, whether shame-proneness and self-compassion moderate the influence of bully-experience on depressive symptoms. Data of depressive adolescent in-patients (n = 37) and healthy controls (n = 19) is analyzed. It could be shown that high shame-proneness reinforces the influence of bully-experience on depressive symptoms. General self-compassion has no moderating influence. However, self-kindness is a protective factor against the negative impact of bully-experience on depressive symptoms. Results are discussed regarding their relevance for therapy and prevention. [Coping with Stress During Childhood and Adolescence].
Authors: Stelzig O, Sevecke K Abstract Coping with Stress During Childhood and Adolescence Humans already start to show stress responses on a physical and mental level in early childhood. Numerous studies have demonstrated age- and gender-related differences in experiencing and managing stress. During the transitional period of adolescence young people often experience higher stress-levels. This might lead to a higher vulnerability for maladaptive stress responses. In other words, adolescents who do not have adequate coping strategies to deal with the developmental challenges of puberty might be at risk for later p...

[Quality of Life in Children with Down Syndrome from Parental Point of View].
Authors: Sarimski K Abstract Quality of Life in Children with Down Syndrome from Parental Point of View Parents of 42 children with Down syndrome (mean age 9 years) report on their child's quality of life (physical, emotional and social domain). The KINDL-R was used as a proxy-report measure. Quality of life correlated negatively with behavioral symptoms (SDQ), but did not vary between children in mainstreamed or special schools. Regression analysis identified the child's behavioral symptoms and parental stress - assessed when the children had reached the age of five - as significant predictors of quality of life a...

[The Sense of Family - Developmental Lines and Problems].
Authors: Reich G Abstract The Sense of Family - Developmental Lines and Problems In spite of multiple criticism and diversification of family types family remains a "destination of yearning". Family stays always in contradiction to the culture of the surrounding society. The sense of family describes the sense of one's own family as a whole. It is composed of the experiences in dyads, triads, tetrades and polyades as well as the emotional atmosphere and the life style of the family as a whole. To the construction of the family as a whole as an internal object, the inner self-image of the family and corres...

The transmission occurs essentially through dysfunctional interaction and disturbed attachment. Parent-child interaction is characterized by a vicious circle of escalating symptoms in the child and increasing helplessness in the parents. For this family psychiatric approaches are helpful, which address the interact...

Authors: Borg-Laufs M Abstract Voluntariness in Outpatient Psychotherapy with Children and Adolescents Voluntariness is no selective construct in psychotherapy with children and adolescents. Generally psychotherapy is utilized under external pressure, at least partially. At any rate it is crucial to painstakingly analyze the motivation for change and possible obstacles to motivation. On that basis different strategies to foster motivation for change can be applied. Problems regarding the efficiency of voluntary or involuntary utilization of outpatient psychotherapy for children and adolescents should be subjects to...

Nowadays there is an increased awareness about involving children in the decision making process and in informing them about treatment. This subject has also gathered more importance through legal actions changed in ...
