A pilot study of the depression, anxiety and stress in Greek military personnel during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic
Conclusions The low levels of depression and stress among our military sample population demonstrate the importance of periodic monitoring of the psychometric items of the DASS-21 subscales to design and implement psychological prevention strategies, especially during the ongoing and future healthcare crises. Degenerative cervical spine changes among early career fighter pilots: a 5-year follow-up
Discussion We found that IVD degeneration and the prevalence of disc herniations increased at a similar rate for fighter pilots and non-flying military students when all cervical levels were summed up. The lack of difference may be explained by the relatively low cumulative +Gz exposure during the first 5 years of a pilots’ career. (Source: Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps)

Framework for the evaluation of military health systems
The organisation of a military health system (MHS) differs from the civilian system due to the role of the armed forces, the unique nature of the supported population and their occupational health requirements. A previously published review of the Military Medical Corps Worldwide Almanac demonstrated the value of a standardised framework for evaluation and comparison of MHSs. This paper proposes such a framework which highlights the unique features of MHSs not covered by health services research of national health systems. These include: national context and summary; organisational structure; firm base facilities, healthca...

How should we manage severe anxiety towards dental treatment in UK service personnel?
Anxiety towards dental treatment is a significant barrier towards care within the United Kingdom Armed Forces. Avoidance of dental treatment results in morbidity, and severe dental infections can lead to systemic disease, which in turn may require hospitalisation. Of greater concern are deployed phobic patients who may develop dental pathology or suffer dental trauma and will likely require evacuation to the UK or a suitable host nation. This has considerable financial implications and in a war setting may place everyone in the evacuation chain at greater risk especially considering that it is not possible to manage these ...

Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) COVID-19 Recovery Service
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes significant mortality and morbidity, with an unknown impact in the medium to long term. Evidence from previous coronavirus epidemics indicates that there is likely to be a substantial burden of disease, potentially even in those with a mild acute illness. The clinical and occupational effects of COVID-19 are likely to impact on the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Collaboration between Defence Primary Healthcare, Defence Secondary Healthcare, Defence Rehabilitation and Defence Occupational Medicine resulted in the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre COVID-19 Recove...

Evaluating serious stress in military veterans, their carers and families: a protocol
In 2018, the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust (ACFT) allocated approximately £4M to seven UK projects to address serious stress in military veterans, their carers and families. These programmes commenced between May and October 2019 and will conclude in August 2021. This paper outlines the protocol for the evaluation of the Tackling Serious Stress programme and the novel support provided to grant holders. Entry into the programmes was through multiple routes, including self-referrals with an anticipated sample of approximately 2000 participants. A common outcomes framework was designed to measure outcomes. Grant hold...

Rehabilitation post-COVID-19: cross-sectional observations using the Stanford Hall remote assessment tool
Conclusions Rehabilitation assessment should be offered to all patients suffering post-COVID-19 symptoms, not only those with laboratory confirmation and considered independently from acute illness severity. This tool offers a structure for a remote assessment. Post-COVID-19 programmes should include SOB, fatigue and mood disturbance management. (Source: Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps)
