A comparison of psychiatric inpatient admissions in youth before and during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: There was strong evidence of increases in psychiatric inpatient admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to expected trends based on pre-pandemic data. To ensure accessible and continuous mental health supports and services for youth and their families during future pandemics, these findings highlight the need for rapid expanse of inpatient mental health services, similar to what occurred in many intensive care units across Canada.PMID:38449720 | PMC:PMC10914150 (Source: Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)

Mood and anxiety symptoms following pediatric mild traumatic brain injury: a scoping review
CONCLUSION: The findings of this review highlight the need for additional research on the relationship between pediatric mTBI and subsequent mood and anxiety symptoms. We particularly recommend long-term prospective cohort studies which include appropriate control groups as well as a neuroimaging component to distinguish complicated from uncomplicated mTBI.PMID:38034405 | PMC:PMC10686225 (Source: Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)

Clozapine-induced myocarditis and subsequent rechallenge: a narrative literature review and case report
J Can Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2023 Nov;32(4):e252-e263. Epub 2023 Nov 1.ABSTRACTClozapine is an antipsychotic medication that has been proven effective for the management of treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). For some patients, it is the only medication that can improve disease burden and quality of life. Clozapine comes with various potentially serious adverse effects which may dissuade physicians from prescribing it despite its well-documented efficacy. One of these adverse effects is clozapine-induced myocarditis (CIM). Due to these risks, patients who undergo a clozapine rechallenge after CIM require close...

Community physician perceptions of managing complex child and adolescent psychiatric patients: a self-determination theory perspective
J Can Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2023 Nov;32(4):264-271. Epub 2023 Nov 1.ABSTRACTChildren and adolescents with complex mental health needs often require a level of care that is unsustainable in tertiary settings. Yet, the psychological impact of this on community physicians, who are tasked with providing quality care to this population, is not well understood. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the present study explores how the challenges of caring for these patients is affecting community physicians' basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and intrinsic motivation. Participants fro...
