Sadism in sexual homicide offenders: identifying distinct groups
Journal of Criminal Psychology,Volume 7, Issue 2, May 2017. Purpose The current study investigates whether it is possible to identify different types of sadistic offenders within a sample of sexual homicide offenders (SHOs). Design/methodology/approach The study addresses this research question through the use of two-step hierarchal cluster analysis and binary logistic regression utilizing a sample of 350 cases of sexual homicide from Canada. Findings Results from cluster analysis show that three groups emerge: 1) a nonsadistic group, 2) a mixed-group that show evidence of some sadistic behavior, and 3) a sadistic group...

Adverse childhood experiences, paraphilias, and serious criminal violence among federal sex offenders
Journal of Criminal Psychology,Volume 7, Issue 2, May 2017. Purpose Adverse childhood experiences are a broad conceptual framework in the social sciences that have only recently been studied within criminology. The current study utilizes this framework by applying it to one of the most potentially dangerous forensic populations. Design/methodology/approach Archival data from 225 federal sex offenders was used to perform descriptive, correlational, and negative binomial regression models. Findings There was substantial evidence of adverse childhood experiences including father abandonment/neglect (36%), physical abuse (n...

Juvenile homicide offender recidivism
Journal of Criminal Psychology,Volume 7, Issue 2, May 2017. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine and explain the recidivism outcomes of a large cohort of juvenile homicide offenders three years following their release from institutional confinement. Design/methodology/approach Retrospective data was utilized to examine demographic, background, and institutional behavior variables on post-release recidivism of 247 juvenile homicide offenders. Analyses distinguish between capital and non-capital juvenile homicide offenders. Findings Descriptive analyses demonstrated a 50 percent recidivism rate among the sample...

Distinguishing homicide, violent sexual, and violent juvenile offending
Journal of Criminal Psychology,Volume 7, Issue 2, May 2017. Purpose The current study examines temperament differences, notably effortful control and negative emotionality, and correlates that distinguish between homicide, violent sexual, and other violent juvenile offenders. Exploring heterogeneity among violent offenders is relevant to intervention strategies and policy implications. Design/methodology/approach Demographic measures, temperament constructs, and individual risk factor indicators were assessed across 30,303 violent juvenile offenders (including 397 homicide offenders) in Florida to assess their ability to...

The interplay between early language and temperamental difficulties in the prediction of severe antisocial behavior among males
Journal of Criminal Psychology,Volume 7, Issue 2, May 2017. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether early language deficits increase the risk of severe antisocial behavior among male children, and whether this association varies as a function of negative temperament during infancy. Design/methodology/approach Data are derived from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B). Both survey methods and direct observation were employed to obtain the data. Logistic regression was used to examine the research questions at hand. Findings Male children with oral vocabulary and grammati...
