Measuring Stakeholder Assessments of Postsurgical Facial Scars: A Retrospective Cohort Inter-rater Analysis of Patients, Physicians, and Medical Student Observers
BACKGROUND The relationship of postoperative facial scar assessments among patients, physicians, and societal onlookers is not clearly defined. OBJECTIVE To identify differences in perceived scar outcomes by different stakeholders. METHODS AND Materials: Retrospective cohort study at a single Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) center during which scars were assessed by: patients, physicians, and medical student observers not involved in patients' care using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (v.2). Eighty-one patients graded their scars at 2 visits: 1 to 2 weeks post-MMS and 3 months post-MMS. De...

Use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in the Surgical Treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION The DLQI, WPAI, and DAS-24 are generic PROMs with poor methodological qualities for PROM development and content validation. Hidradenitis suppurativa–specific instruments are not used in available studies because they have been developed recently and, therefore, partially validated. More research is needed to further investigate methodological qualities of HS-specific instruments. (Source: Dermatologic Surgery)

Durable Clearance Rate of Photodynamic Therapy for Bowen Disease and Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION Our findings support the selective use of PDT for BD; however, patients should be advised of potential for recurrence. Although PDT can be used for certain cases of cSCC, the high rate of treatment failure necessitates close surveillance for residual or recurrent disease. Further studies are needed to justify the usage of PDT in the treatment of BD and cSCC. (Source: Dermatologic Surgery)

Recurrence Status, Perineural Invasion, and Hypothyroidism Are Associated With Lymph Node Metastasis in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case–Control Study
BACKGROUND Lymph node metastasis is a critical prognostic indicator for mortality in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). OBJECTIVE To identify and characterize key risk factors for SCC lymph node metastasis. METHODS This was a multi-institutional, case–control study of 65 cutaneous SCCs with known lymph node metastasis matched with 195 cutaneous SCCs without lymph node metastasis (3:1 matching). The cases and controls were matched by anatomic location, age, and sex. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were generated to determine the association between specific ...
