Carotid intima –media thickness and cardiovascular risk factors in healthy volunteers
ConclusionIn individuals without overt cardiovascular risk factors and thus at low cardiovascular risk, CIMT and cardiovascular risk factors correlated only partially suggesting that combining CIMT and conventional risk factors or common derived scores may improve risk prediction in individuals at low cardiovascular risk. The clinical benefit as to cardiovascular events of such combined risk prediction needs to be explored in large prospective cohorts of still healthy low-risk volunteers. A systematic review of the cost-effectiveness of ultrasound in emergency care settings
ConclusionsThe body of existing evidence, though limited, generally demonstrates that the inclusion of US in emergency care settings allows for more cost-effective care. The most definitive evidence for improvements in cost-effectiveness surround the evaluation of pediatric appendicitis, followed by the evaluation of abdominal trauma. POCUS outside of trauma has had mixed results. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

Are seminal vesicles a potential pitfall during pelvic exploration using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)?
ConclusionsSeminal vesicles are a potential pitfall when interpreting transverse ultrasound images of the male pelvis in the context of point-of-care ultrasound. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

Diagnostic accuracy of lung ultrasound for SARS-CoV-2: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsWhen applied in the appropriate patient population, lung POCUS is an inexpensive and reliable tool for rapid screening and diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 in symptomatic patients with influenza-like illness. Adoption of lung POCUS screening for SARS-CoV-2 may identify patients who do not require additional testing and reduce the need for RT-PCR testing in resource-limited environments and during surge periods. The reproducibility of measuring maximum abdominal aortic aneurysm diameter from ultrasound images
ConclusionsThis study suggests that the comparison of maximum AAA diameter between repeat images is most reproducibly performed by a single trained observer measuring diameters in the AP plane. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

Descriptive analysis of a comparison between lung ultrasound and chest radiography in patients suspected of COVID-19
ConclusionOur study demonstrated a strong disagreement between LUS interpretation and CXR reading in the early approach to patients suspected of COVID-19. Comparison with CT studies and RT-PCR results seems to confirm the superiority of LUS over a second retrospective reading of CXR. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

Patients in intensive care unit for COVID-19 pneumonia: the lung ultrasound  patterns at admission and discharge. An observational pilot study
ConclusionsLUS collected in COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure at ICU admission and discharge appears to be characterized by predominantly lateral and posterior non-translobar C pattern and B2 pattern. The calculated LUSS remained elevated at discharge without significant difference from admission in both groups of survived and non-survived patients. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

Applications of intraoperative Duplex ultrasound in vascular surgery: a systematic review
ConclusionsIODUS can be used to detect defects in both CEA and LEB procedures. However, there is a need for more robust prospective studies to determine the best scanning strategy, criteria for intervention and the impact on clinical outcomes. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

The effect of pelvic pathology on uterine vein diameters
ConclusionsOur findings show that of all pelvic pathology detected on TVS, only fibroids are significantly associated with uterine venous enlargement. Factors known to be associated with enlarged veins in women with normal pelvic organs, namely parity and menopausal status, also apply in patients with pelvic pathology. Future studies of uterine venous circulation should take into account the presence and size of uterine fibroids when assessing women for the signs of PVC. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)

The role of ultrasound imaging in vascular compression syndromes
AbstractVascular compression syndromes are rare alterations that have in common the compression of an arterial and/or venous vessel by contiguous structures and can be congenital or acquired. The best known are the Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Nutcracker Syndrome, May –Thurner Syndrome, and Dunbar Syndrome. The incidence of these pathologies is certainly underestimated due to the non-specific clinical signs and their frequent asymptomaticity. Being a first-level method, Ultrasound plays a very important role in identifying these alterations, almost always allow ing a complete diagnostic classification. If in expert hands, t...

Renal resistive index is associated with acute kidney injury in COVID-19 patients treated in the intensive care unit
ConclusionsCritically ill COVID-19 patients with AKI have higher RRI compared to those without AKI, and elevated RRI may have a role in identifying severe and oliguric AKI at the bedside in these patients. (Source: Critical Ultrasound Journal)
