Special Issue on the Future of Research Software Engineers in the United States—Part I
This is part one of a two-part special issue focused on research software engineers (RSEs) in the United States. RSEs are members of the research software ecosystem who have knowledge, expertise, and interest in developing the high-quality software that is integral to advancing the frontiers of research across various scientific, engineering, humanities, and other domains. The people in the RSE role are critical to the success of both the research software and the underlying research project advanced by the software. RSEs are particularly important within the complex research landscape, which integrates highperformance com...

Accidental Translationists: A Perspective From the Trenches
Much of computer science research can benefit from the Translational Computing Science paradigm, which bridges foundational, use-inspired, and applied research with the delivery and deployment of its outcomes and supports essential bidirectional interplays. However, its wide adoption continues to face multiple challenges and roadblocks. This paper uses the perspectives and experiences of two accidental translationists to illustrate the translation process, it impacts, as well as the challenges and roadblocks faced. A Secure Future for Open-Source Computational Science and Engineering
Open-source research software plays a central role in accelerating advances in science and engineering. Its increasing significance, however, incentivizes malicious actors to attack that software and compromise the systems on which it runs, undermining the free and open exchange of trustworthy research codes. In the world of conventional software development, there has been a shift towards integrating security as early as possible in the development process to guard against malicious activity. Given the potential risks at hand, developers of research software must consider how to do the same across the research software li...

Accelerating HPC With Quantum Computing: It Is a Software Challenge Too
This article describes our vision for an integrated ecosystem that combines existing HPC and evolving quantum software stacks into a single system to enable a common and continuous user experience. This integration comes with several major challenges as quantum systems pose significantly different requirements including increased need for compilation at run time, long optimization times, statistical evaluations of results, and the need to work with few centralized resources. To overcome these challenges, new scheduling approaches on the HPC side and new programming approaches on the QC side are required. (Source: Computing...

On the Role of Computer Languages in Scientific Computing
Scientific codes are complex software systems. Their engineering involves various stakeholders using various computer languages for defining artifacts at different abstraction levels and for different purposes. In this article, we review the overall processes leading to the development of scientific software, and discuss the role of computer languages in the definition of the different artifacts. We provide guidelines to make informed decisions when the time comes to choose a computer language to develop scientific software. (Source: Computing in Science and Engineering)
