Victims first? Examining the place of ‘child criminal exploitation’ within ‘child first’ youth justice
Abstract‘Child first’ principles have become increasingly prevalent within youth justice policy in England and Wales. In parallel, the concept of ‘child criminal exploitation’ (CCE) has also emerged. On the surface, CCE compliments ‘child first’ principles by reconceptualising ‘young offenders ’, who would previously have been criminalised, as children who are victims of exploitation. However, this article identifies two areas of conflict: rather than being diversionary, current responses to CCE further entrench children in the justice system; and, rather than responding holistically to unmet need among all...

Considering the moral implications of psychiatric diagnosis for children
AbstractIncreasing numbers of children are meeting criteria for psychiatric disorders. While diagnoses may be of situational and individual benefit, they also have sustained and significant impacts on children's lives, including what they believe to be true, and how they understand themselves. Psychiatric diagnosis, therefore, has moral implications for children. This paper considers these moral implications, including uncertainty about the accuracy, treatment efficacy and long-term effects of psychiatric diagnosis for children through a critical lens. Challenges of identifying, diagnosing and treating childhood mental ill...

The assessment of cliques in bound child and adolescent groups: A systematic scoping review
AbstractThe purpose of this systematic scoping review was to examine research that has assessed cliques within bound child and adolescent groups. A total of 10,878 studies were obtained from six research databases, with 68 studies ultimately being included. Results highlighted a range of methods used for the assessment of cliques with social network analysis and peer nominations being most prevalent. Moreover, research question(s) were encompassed within the following categories: antecedent-oriented (n = 13), outcome-oriented (n = 43) or the general nature of cliques (n = 12). These findings demonstrate the complexit...

Latent classes and longitudinal patterns of material hardship as predictors of child well ‐being
This study examined the associations of multifaceted material hardship measured cross-sectionally and longitudinally with children's well-being in the United States. Results from linear regression and child fixed effects models indicated that more intense material hardship had consistent, detrimental associations with child health status and internalizing and externalizing behaviours. More intense longitudinal patterns of material hardship were consistently associated with behaviours only. These findings examine new, multifaceted measures of material hardship and suggest associations between child well-being, particularly ...

Nomadic boat ‐dwelling children of Southeast Asia: Discourses on the Sama‐Bajau children and implications on decentring child migration studies
This article examines the discursive narratives in academic literature about the nomadic boat-dwelling children of the Sama-Bajau group in Southeast Asia. Through examining academic literature from 1989 to 2021, this paper explores how the literature shapes and mediates the narratives about Sama-Bajau children. Findings suggest two threads of discursive narratives —one takes a developmentalist lens, and the other offers alternative narratives that reveal the complex identities of Sama-Bajau children. These observations highlight the importance of nuanced conversations on child sea nomadism towards further developments of...

Adultification, neglect and sexual abuse at home: Selected narratives of orphaned girls in KwaMashu, South Africa
AbstractThis paper explores two orphaned girls' accounts of victimization and vulnerability to child sexual abuse in their family homes. Interviews with these girls revealed a trend of neglect, adversity and processes of adultification which involved accounts of sexual abuse within their family homes. According to the data, the participants are vulnerable and they experience victimization as they are routinely sexually abused by older male relatives and non-related men and boys inside their family homes – where they are supposed to feel safe and protected. We argue that these two young girls' experiences need to be under...

The association between disability, school achievement expectations, self ‐efficacy and psychosomatic problems among Swedish adolescents attending compulsory regular school
AbstractThe purpose was to investigate the association between disability, and psychosomatic problems among adolescents at compulsory regular school also taking into account parental and student achievement expectations and student self-efficacy. We analysed cross-sectional questionnaire data collected in 2010, from 2004 Swedish adolescents. The results showed that the degree of psychosomatic problems and self-efficacy varied with regard to whether the adolescent reported having a disability or not. The distribution of parents' and adolescents' own achievement expectations did not differ significantly with regard to having...

AbstractUsing Yi adolescents in rural China (n = 163) as an example, this qualitative study explored how school ethnic socialization shaped the ethnic identity development and the future self of indigenous youths in mainstream Han-dominant school settings. ‘My friends are like my family’: The positive impact of high‐quality friendships on former foster care youth
AbstractThere is evidence to suggest that quality friendships have a positive impact on the people involved. By focusing on the impact that quality friendships have had on former foster care youth, this article contributes to the wider debate on the issue and fills a gap in the literature. Through the communicative methodology, 15 communicative daily life stories were conducted in Spain with young people who had been in alternative care and had successfully managed to reach university. The discussion shows that the support and strength of quality friendships helped them in their quest for a brighter, more successful future...

‘Why blame the girls’?: Contextual factors enabling juvenile prostitution in a Ghanaian metropolis
AbstractFramed by Urie Bronfenbrenners' (1979) ecological systems theory, this paper analyses the contextual factors that facilitate commercial sex work among adolescent girls in a metropolis in Ghana. Focusing on contextual factors rather than individual perspectives, we examined the background of minors involved in sex trade by interviewing 15 juvenile prostitutes (aged 14 –17) and several key stakeholders. We explored factors that cause them to engage in prostitution, such as dysfunctional family systems, peer and sibling influence, inadequate accommodation, media influence and fashionable trends, as well as poverty a...

Childhood and children's migration in the era of COVID ‐19: A case study of Zimbabwean children/young people's migration to South Africa
AbstractThis paper draws on research with a group of Zimbabwean orphaned young people. It explores their experiences of migrating to South Africa during the COVID-19 period when official borders were closed. It draws attention to the complexities of south –south migration in the era of COVID-19 in a way that situates the orphaned child migrants as having contradictory, fluid identities that are simultaneously victimised, agentic and infinitely more complex than the dominant binary representation of adult/child.
