Assessment of disparities in timely diagnosis and comprehensive workup of cognitive impairment between English and Spanish speakers
CONCLUSIONS: Non-English language preference is likely to be a contributing factor to timely diagnosis of cognitive impairment. In this study, Spanish language preference rather than Hispanic/Latino ethnicity was a significant predictor of a less timely diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Policy changes are needed to reduce barriers in cognitive disorders care for Spanish-speaking patients.PMID:38336573 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.030 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

Associations Between Vitamin D Deficiency/Insufficiency and Depression Expose Health Disparities in Older Rural West Texans: A Project FRONTIER Study
CONCLUSION: A significant negative association between VD level and depressive symptoms was revealed in our aging Project FRONTIER participants. HLE individuals were overrepresented in VDD/VDI samples, and VDD/VDI was associated primarily with the Dysphoria GDS subdomain. Regression analysis predicted high VD sufficiency (95.5 ng/mL) to be associated with no depressive symptoms (GDS=0). Our results underscore troubling disparities in VD-related depressive symptoms between HLE and non-HLE populations.PMID:38320908 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.029 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

The Effects of Estrogen on the Risk of Developing Dementia: A Cohort Study Using the UK Biobank Data
CONCLUSION: This study found that more prolonged exposure to estrogen (longer estrogen length and later age at last estrogen exposure) had a decreased risk for dementia, and shorter exposure to estrogen (later age at menarche and history of reproductive surgery) had an increased risk for dementia. Based on the results of this study, estrogen might have a protective role in women in the development of dementia.PMID:38310026 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.025 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

The Relationship Between First Presenting Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Older Adults and Autopsy-Confirmed Memory Disorders
CONCLUSIONS: Since neuropsychiatric symptoms are frequently the first presenting symptom of dementia, their associations with well-defined neuropathological diagnoses may help clinicians predict the subtype of future dementias.PMID:38296755 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.015 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

Childhood and Adulthood Trauma Associate With Cognitive Aging Among Black and White Older Adults
CONCLUSION: Traumatic experiences, particularly in adulthood, may impact late-life cognitive health if not addressed. Findings highlight foci for clinical researchers and providers: adverse life events as a source of cognitive risk, and identification of community-specific resources that buffer behavioral, physical, and mental health sequelae of previous and incident trauma.PMID:38288940 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2023.09.015 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Plasma-Derived Exosomes Mediate Cognitive Impairment Through Hippocampal Neuronal Cell Pyroptosis
CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show a hypothesis that plasma-derived exosomes from severe OSA patients promote pyroptosis and increased expression of inflammatory factors in vivo and in vitro, and lead to impaired cognitive function in mice, suggesting that OSA-EXOS can mediate CI through pyroptosis of hippocampal neurons. In addition, exosome cargo from OSA-EXOS showed a unique miRNAs profile compared to NC-EXOS, suggesting that plasma exosome associated miRNAs may reflect the differential profile of OSA related diseases, such as CI.PMID:38290937 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.017 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

Health Care Spending, Use, and Financial Hardship Among Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage Enrollees With Mental Health Symptoms
CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that MA enrollees with mental health symptoms were more likely to experience limited access to mental health services and high financial hardship compared to TM enrollees with mental health symptoms. There is a need to develop policies aimed at improving access to mental health services while reducing financial burden for MA enrollees.PMID:38267358 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.014 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)
