Experiences With a Distant Reiki Intervention During the COVID-19 Pandemic Using the Science of Unitary Human Beings Framework
An increasing number of individuals are reporting increased stress and anxiety associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. A feasibility, mixed-method design was conducted to investigate distant Reiki as a virtual healing modality within Rogers' framework of the Science of Unitary Human Beings. Data were collected using pre- and post-distant Reiki session interviews and 2 surveys. Study findings demonstrated changes in participant pattern manifestation and statistically significant reductions in perceived stress and anxiety (P (Source: Advances in Nursing Science)

Time to Revisit Heart Failure Self-Care: A Concept Analysis
Self-care is a central concept in heart failure management and nursing practice. Yet, the uptake of heart failure self-care has been uncritical and detached from broader contexts. Therefore, heart failure self-care was explored using Rodger's evolutionary concept analysis approach to identify antecedents, attributes, and consequences with attention to context, time, application, and meaning. The analysis suggests that heart failure self-care tends to focus on individual behaviors to the detriment of social and structural determinants of health. It also shifts responsibility away from the health care system and onto the ind...

Determinants of School Diabetes Care Services and Quality Through the Lens of the School Nurse: A Qualitative Analysis
Schools play a critical role in students' diabetes management and ensure their safety and well-being. We conducted key informant interviews with 11 school nurses in Missouri to assess determinants for diabetes care implementation. Five themes and 29 subthemes were identified concerning school nurses, schools, external stakeholders, government, and the COVID-19 pandemic. A social-ecological model was developed to elucidate each level's barriers, facilitators, and resources, and their interplay. School nurses should lead diabetes management, emergency planning, and health education for students/staff. Multiple gray areas exi...

The Patient Care Experience as Perceived by Hispanic Patients With Chronic Illness Undergoing Transplant: A Grounded Theory
This study used a constructivist grounded theory method to explore how English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic patients seeking kidney and liver transplant care at a safety-net hospital perceive and interpret the care experience. A grounded theory process model emerged finding comfort, communication, connection, and care to be interdependent factors crucial for a positive hospital admission. Furthermore, “cultural context” was found to influence perception of each of these concepts. This research provides key insights into how Hispanics may perceive their needs when seeking care. A Supplemental Digital Content video abs...

The Evolution of Maternal Role Attainment: A Theory Analysis
This analysis highlights the evolution of the theory of maternal role attainment. Reva Rubin established the foundation for theory of maternal role attainment in her 1967 article. In 2004, Ramona Mercer made the argument to change the name from maternal role attainment to becoming a mother. In this analysis, recommendations are made to further develop this theory including updated theoretical models. This theory remains relevant to nursing, especially to nurses working with families during this transitionary time. (Source: Advances in Nursing Science)

Advances in Conceptual and Methodological Issues in Symptom Cluster Research: A 20-Year Perspective
Two conceptual approaches are used to evaluate symptom clusters: “clustering” symptoms (ie, variable-centered analytic approach) and “clustering” patients (ie, person-centered analytic approach). However, these methods are not used consistently and conceptual clarity is needed. Given the emergence of novel methods to evaluate symptom clusters, a review of the conceptual basis for older and newer analytic methods is warranted. Therefore, this article will review the conceptual basis for symptom cluster research; compare and contrast the conceptual basis for using variable-centered versus patient-centered analytic ap...

Access Denied: Nurses' Perspectives of Access to Oncology Care Among Indigenous Peoples in Canada
Inequitable access to oncology care is a significant issue among Indigenous Peoples in Canada; however, the perspectives of oncology nurses have not been explored. Guided by an interpretive descriptive methodology, we explored nurses' perspectives on access to oncology care among Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Nurses described the health care system as “broken” and barriers to accessing oncology care as layered and compounding. Lack of culturally safe care was articulated as a significant issue impacting equitable access, while biomedical discourses were pervasive and competed with nurses' attempts at providing cultural...

Redefining Cheating on Written Exams: A Shift Toward Authentic Assessment to Promote Universal Design for Learning in the Context of Critical Caring Pedagogy
Educators who recognize the value of authentic written exams for promoting student critical thinking may struggle with concerns about cheating. In this article, we explore how educators may use open-web take-home exams to help students develop integrity and evidence-based practice skills. Lang's theory is used to explore why students may cheat. We discuss the importance of caring assessment practices by drawing on critical caring pedagogy and universal design for learning. Throughout the discussion, we illustrate how authentic questions and instruction that is focused on dialogue, collaboration, and resource use may reduce...

An Analysis of the Use of the Terms Sex and Gender in Research Reported in Nursing Journals
Accurately measuring and reporting the demographic characteristics of research participants are imperative to provide consumers of research with an understanding of who was included in a study. While researchers often, incorrectly, use the variables sex and gender interchangeably, these 2 variables are different. We conducted a content analysis of 239 randomly selected research articles, with the purpose of describing how researchers have used sex and gender in studies published in nursing journals and identifying opportunities for improved clarity and precision in measuring these 2 variables. We found that significant imp...

Revisioning Obesity in Health Care Practice and Research: New Perspectives on the Role of Body Temperature
Obesity is a leading health problem in the United States and globally. Relatively few people with obesity achieve long-term weight control, suggesting that obesity and resistance to weight change represent functional adaption of energy homeostasis to the environment. The purpose of this article is to synthesize the literature regarding the relationship between environmental temperature and body weight and fat mass to provide a new explanation of obesity as a problem of maintaining core body temperature. Chronic exposure to cool environmental temperatures likely contributed to the obesity epidemic, and passive whole-body wa...

The Prenatal Primary Nursing Care Experience of Pregnant Women in Contexts of Vulnerability: A Systematic Review With Thematic Synthesis
The contexts of vulnerability are diversified and cover a wide range of situations where pregnant women are likely to experience threats or disparities. Nurses should consider the particular circumstances of women in contexts of vulnerability. We used a qualitative thematic synthesis to describe the experience of these women regarding their prenatal primary nursing care. We identified that the women's experience is shaped by the prenatal care. The fulfillment of their needs and expectations will guide their decision regarding the utilization of their prenatal care. We propose a theoretical model to guide nurses, promoting ...

Self-management of the Dual Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and Diabetes During COVID-19: A Qualitative Study
The purpose of this qualitative secondary analysis research was to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on self-management behaviors and practices for people living with the dual diagnoses of HIV/AIDS and type 2 diabetes mellitus and to identify early pandemic-specific disruptions or changes to their self-management practices. In-depth interviews conducted in May-June 2020 with 9 participants, and analyzed using content analysis, revealed 5 themes: adjusting to living with HIV/AIDS and diabetes impacts beliefs about COVID-19 risks; COVID-19 information seeking and accuracy; trade-offs in self-managing multiple chro...
