No Place Like Home: Improving the Transition From NICU to Home Through the NICU to Nursery Program
Adv Neonatal Care. 2024 Feb 1;24(1):46-57. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001134. Epub 2024 Jan 12.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Boston Children's Hospital's Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) discharges about a third of its medically complex infants home. Parental feedback indicated a need for more education and training in discharge preparation.PURPOSE: The NICU to Nursery (N2N) program was created to better prepare parents to care for their medically complex infants following Level IV NICU discharge. The goals were to (1) mitigate safety risks, (2) assess parent satisfaction, (3) assess pediatric primary care providers' (PC...

Competing Tensions: Nurse Perceptions of Family-Centered Care and Parents' Needs in Neonatal Care
Adv Neonatal Care. 2024 Feb 1;24(1):35-42. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001136. Epub 2024 Jan 9.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Family-centered care is founded upon collaboration between parents and healthcare professionals, caring for a child and parents as one entity. The unfamiliar neonatal environment and complexity of care can make family-centered care challenging.PURPOSE: To explore neonatal nurses' perceptions of family-centered care and parents' cultural needs.METHODS: This was a qualitative descriptive study using interviews to gather data from registered nurses, and analyzed using inductive content analysis.RESULTS: Ten neonat...

Topical Use of Human Milk in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: An Integrative Review
Adv Neonatal Care. 2024 Jan 5. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001124. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Research has shown that the bioactive components in human milk could demonstrate efficacy when applied topically. One common neonatal skin issue is diaper dermatitis (DD). DD treatment and prevention guidelines often lack the inclusion of topical human milk as a viable option.PURPOSE: To analyze the safety and efficacy of topical human milk application as a means to support future research of human milk as a topical treatment for DD.DATA SOURCES: Google Scholar, CINAHL, PubMed, and Cochrane.STUDY SELECTION: The searc...

Development, Psychometric Testing, and Reference Values of the Infant Eating Assessment Tool (InfantEAT)
Adv Neonatal Care. 2024 Jan 5. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Problematic feeding is common in infancy, particularly in infants with a history of premature birth or medical complexity. A concise, valid, and reliable measure of feeding that can be used across feeding methods is needed for clinical practice and research.PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to create an assessment tool to evaluate symptoms of problematic feeding in infants that can be used across all feeding methods (breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and mixed feeding), then test its psychometric properties and est...

Improving Arterial Puncture Success in Neonatal Patients Using Transillumination
Adv Neonatal Care. 2023 Dec 21. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001120. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Arterial punctures are a common procedure used to obtain blood samples for lab tests that guide treatment of neonatal patients. These punctures can be painful and have associated risks, emphasizing the importance of keeping attempts to a minimum.PURPOSE: The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to determine whether using transillumination to visualize arteries before and while obtaining a blood sample would improve outcomes in neonatal patients.METHODS: Quantitative data were collected pre- and postimp...

The Safety of Body Wraps on Skin-to-Skin Care in the Neonatal Population: A Pilot Study
This study found that SSC with a body wrap is safe for preterm infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This is the first study to explore the use, safety, and effectiveness of body wraps during SSC with preterm infants in an NICU. Future research should be conducted with larger sample sizes to further evaluate the safety and efficacy.PMID:38127581 | DOI:10.1097/ANC.0000000000001133 (Source: Advances in Neonatal Care)

Adv Neonatal Care. 2023 Dec 21. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001123. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The Chandler Regional Medical Center (CRMC) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) began a phased implementation of Eat-Sleep-Console (ESC) for the management of those at risk for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).PURPOSE: The purpose of this initiative is to track short-term outcomes as well as the program's effect on nursing workflow and job performance rating/satisfaction.METHODS: A retrospective review of the ESC implementation process at CRMC from the years 2018-2020. The study consisted of 3 epochs: (1) ...

Family Management Skills Reported by Parents of Preterm Infants in the NICU Using the Self- and Family Management Framework (SFMF)
Adv Neonatal Care. 2023 Dec 21. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0000000000001140. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Across the globe, family-integrated care (FICare) has become an evidence-based standard in which parents deliver the majority of infant care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Because of extensive barriers to parent presence, adaptations to FICare may be required for successful implementation. Family management theory may provide structure to the Parent Education of FICare and help nurses guide parents' skill development as equal care members.PURPOSE: To identify family management skills employed by NICU pa...
