The dual diagnosis clinician shared care model – a clinical mental health dual diagnosis integrated treatment initiative
This study aims to provide evidence for a relatively unexplored model in clinical mental health services within the state of Victoria, Australia. Dual diagnosis clinicians were placed into community mental health clinics in a shared-care, modified case management role, to provide primary and secondary consultations to select consumers and/or their carers, as well as to provide capacity-building training to the mental health staff facing real world clinical challenges in dual diagnosis service delivery. Since the commencement of this service, more than 800 consumers of the adult mental health service have been sup...

Addiction recovery stories: Paul Makin in conversation with Lisa Ogilvie
Paul Makin, Lisa Ogilvie Advances in Dual Diagnosis, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a series of recovery stories that examine candid accounts of addiction and recovery. Shared components in the recovery process are considered, along with the change and growth needed to support the transition from addiction to recovery. The connectedness, hope, identity, meaning in life and empowerment (CHIME) framework comprises five elements important to recovery. CHIME provides a standard to qualitatively study recovery. Understanding women ’s help-seeking for problematic and unhealthy alcohol use through the lens of complexity theory
This study aims to explore the dynamic nature of women’s help-seeking for problematic and unhealthy alcohol use and how this can be compounded by unsuitable treatment services, especially when women present with complex needs. Thirteen semi-structured interviews with women who had accessed alcohol-support services were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically using the complexity theory. For women with complex needs, the process of seeking help may trigger unpredictable behaviours, health or social problems and intermittent serial access to treatment. Current services do not always addre...

The values in action character strengths model in addiction recovery: a case study
The objective of the intervention is to identify some of the strengths described by an individual in their account of recovery, ascertain their signature strengths through validated assessment and, based on the exploration of this information, support the individual in a reflective exercise to consider how their character strengths have positively affected their recovery to date and the effect this new knowledge could have on their ongoing recovery. The VIA character strengths model has identified 24 positive qualities that are present in the human condition. In this case study, the VIA model is used to identify stren...

Neurocognitive and substance use disorders in older adults: challenges and evidence
This study aims to review the presentation of substance use disorders in older adults, how addiction intertwines with neurocognitive disorders and how to approach this vulnerable population. Electronic data searches of PubMed, Medline and the Cochrane Library (years 2000–2021) were performed using the keywords “neurocognitive,” “dementia,” “substance use,” “addiction,” “older adults” and “elderly.” The authors, in consensus, selected pivotal studies and conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings. Acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a text messaging intervention to reduce high-risk alcohol use among adults 50 and older: an exploratory study
Alexis Kuerbis, Silke Behrendt, Varnica Arora, Frederick J. Muench Advances in Dual Diagnosis, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- Prevalence rates of older adults (OA, 50+) with high-risk alcohol use are rapidly growing. Barriers to intervention persist for OA. Mobile interventions, specifically short message service (SMS, also known as text messaging), provide an opportunity to overcome such barriers. The purpose of this paper is to explore the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of four SMS intervention conditions compared to mobile assessment only among OA (50–65 years...

Susan Lynn Heward-Belle, Margaret Kertesz, Cathy Humphreys, Menka Tsantefski, Jasmin Isobe Advances in Dual Diagnosis, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- It is well established that the service system has a poor history of responding holistically to address the needs of children and families living with co-occurring complexities such as domestic violence, parental mental health and/or substance use. Dual case study of continued use vs cessation of cannabis in psychosis: a theoretically informed approach to a hard problem
This study shows that a systems approach for understanding changes in cannabis use is meaningful; the richness of observations add to the understanding of differences in outcomes. Findings suggest that reductions in cannabis use in psychosis could be dependent on synergistic effects between contextual conditions. Attending closer to the experience of patients may help inform future interventions. However, interventions focusing on single mechanisms may be futile, if an array of individual, formative experiences are a prerequisite for change. A systemic understanding of dual diagnosis calls for tailored, individualized inte...
