Electronic skin or "e-skin" that has sensing capabilities
What if we could create an artificial skin that has sensing capabilities? Electronic skin? e-skin? Digital skin? There's a recent paper published in Nature titled, "An ultra-lightweight design for imperceptible plastic electronics." The authors describe a platform that makes electronics both virtually unbreakable4 and imperceptible. Fabricated directly on ultrathin (1 μm) polymer foils, our electronic circuits are light (3 g m−2) and ultraflexible and conform to their ambient, dynamic environment. Organic transistors with an ultra-dense oxide gate dielectric a few nanometres thick formed at room temperature enabl...

My review of the Shine by Misfit Wearables #QuantifiedSelf
I'm an early adopter of wearable technology and fitness gadgets. I still have my original Fitbit Classic. Unlike some others, I haven't lost my Fitbit and I haven't accidentally thrown it into the wash with the rest of my laundry. I've also tested the BodyMedia FIT armband, the Nike+ FuelBand, and other self-tracking fitness gadgets/pedometers. I was even a Zeo sleep headband user (but they closed their company). Most recently, I have been wearing the Shine by Misfit Wearables to track my daily physical activity. This is one of the newest self-tracking gadgets to hit the market. The Shine is a sma...

What happened to @Medpedia? It's dead!
I've been following the Medpedia project for some time now. It appears that Medpedia is dead. Am I wrong? Did the site get hacked? Or, did it die a quiet death? What happened to Medpedia? It's a project that had such potential, but perhaps they didn't have enough resources to sustain it. Medpedia was a collaborative project launched on 17 February 2009. Its aim is to create an open access online medical wiki encyclopedia in association with Harvard Medical School, Stanford School of Medicine, Berkeley School of Public Health, University of Michigan Medical School, the United Kingdom's National Health Serv...

Legal liability of an online curbside consultation
These days, physicians are getting informal consultations (curbside consults) and "second opinion" feedback from other physicians by discussing patient care on closed, restricted online physician-only communities like Doximity. What is the legal liability of discussing a patient and getting input from physicians who have never seen or examined the patient? According to this document from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center: Some states have recognized that imposing liability for giving an informal opinion would have a chilling effect on the collegiality among physicians and, in the long term, have nega...
