Yahoo - poem about aging with dementia
Turning true-blue loyal friends into treacherous strangers.
Dementiaby Max WallackIt gallops in silently on powerful hoofs
Snatching sweet, precious, forgotten memories
Turning true-blue loyal friends into treacherous strangers
Clogging synapses with emptiness
Crumbling trust into excruciating paranoia
With bleak darkness comes the anxious wakefulness of broad daylight
And bitter terror encompasses every living fiber
"If I sleep, where will I be when I wake up?"
The compulsion to run, the paralysis of fear
Mature, child-like dependence
Retracing youthful development, but in rapid reverse
Cureless medicines, meaningless ...

Idea Bags Alzheimer's
Sometimes you can come up with a great idea that will not only improve the life of a person living with dementia, it can also improve the attitude and life of the caregiver.
I just finished reading a terrific article that contains an idea for reducing dementia patient anxiety.
The article, Bags of familiar objects help those with dementia to reduce anxiety, describes how you can put together a group of items in a cloth bag and how this can be used to redirect Alzheimer's patients, and as a result, reduce anxiety or agitation.
This reminded me of another article we published on the Alzheimer's Reading Room ...

Memory Loss
One of the first signs of dementia is short term memory loss. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia.
I want to make two points here. First, short term memory loss is hard to detect in the early stages of dementia.
Second, long term memory, memories of information stored long ago, still resides in the brain. If you try patiently you can still bring this information out, and it is sometimes fascinating.

Google Search - meanness in elderly
The confusion about Alzheimer's like behavior occurs because early dementia is like a chicken/egg disease.
What counts more?
The bizarre behaviors like meanness, worries about money, shuffling the feet?
Or, the perception that the person can function normally and perform tasks like driving and shopping?
Most people will opt for a simple explanation -- they are just getting old. This explains the new and different behaviors they see.

Do Family Caregivers Experience Greater Health Risks?
An aging America means more demand for caregivers who help care for the elderly, but a looming shortage of caregivers could endanger many of the most vulnerable.
A new study from the Johns Hopkins University Center on Aging and Health indicates that adults who provided care for a chronically ill or disabled family member had a lower death rate than a similar group of non-caregivers. These finding are surprising.

Are Alzheimer's Caregivers the Forgotten?
Once Alzheimer's disease strikes, Alzheimer's caregivers get to witness the craziness that comes with Alzheimer's day in and day out.
If you think it is disconcerting to see someone suffering from Alzheimer's for a few hours, a few days, or a week, think about what it might be like -- for every hour of every day for years.

No. In a nutshell, dementia is a symptom, and Alzheimer's disease is the cause of the symptom.
