Happy Birthday USN!
Naval History and Heritage Command : About In 1972 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy?s birthday. In contrast to Navy Day, the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees, and dependents. Since 1972 each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service." Happy Birthday to this humble, not quite abandoned blog
This started as a lark on May 2, 2002. It’s gone through several platforms and hosts, but it’s always been mine (with the occasional guest). Sixteen. I’ve had GruntDoc the blog for 16 years. It should have to take a driving test today. Anyway, thanks to the 9 of you who still check in from time to time. As Twitter is increasingly awful I expect I’ll do more here soon. Happy Birthday little blog. No related posts. (Source: GruntDoc)

ERKA Stethoscope Review: It ’ s Really Good!
What’s an ERKA stehoscope? It’s a beautiful, well made ‘scope from Germany, and ERKA is trying to get into the US market. Full disclosure: I was given one to try out and keep on the condition I would write about my experience, and no promises were made about what I’d say. Also, it should be noted I’m an Emergency Physician, not an audiologist or a professional tester. I have no specific credentials for exaluating anything except unfrosted strawberry Pop-Tarts™, so if you dislike my assessment or feel the urge to quibble, please know I’ll agree with your objection so you don’t hav...

GruntDoc ’ s Blog Birthday!
15 years! That’s more than 2/loyal reader (thanks, you seven!) May 2, 2002, a day that will live…on the internet, if nowhere else. Yes I’ve moved almost exclusively to Twitter, but the blog proved its worth earlier this year, so I’m obviously going to keep it up, and post here when I need to.   Thanks for reading. Geriatric Nursing ’ s top 99 nurse blogs, and I ’ m one of them!
The whole list is here, and it looks pretty good (Emergiblog is still out there, which is nice, most of the others were new to me), and then there’s the writeup they gave this humble blog: Allen is an emergency care physician from Texas who describes himself as “a grunt in the doctor world”. Having been immersed in the critical aspects of healthcare for most of his career, the Grunt Doc has certification in Emergency Medicine and is now retired, living with his family. His commentary is at times amusing, other times quick-witted and sharp – but it always manages to put a smile on our faces. That’s very ni...

The Rape of Emergency Medicine, 2017 version
Summa Health, an Ohio Hospital system, recently changed ED contracts from their 40 year group to a new one. On FOUR DAYS’ NOTICE! Four days, over the Christmas/New Year’s Holiday. That sounds distinctly unsafe, beyond the gross lack of sense, or commitment to a 40 year partner. In case you think this is going smoothly, here’s a post to the ACEP ED Informatics Section from one of their former doctors (reproduced here with permission in its entirety): I wanted to inform you, my colleagues, about what is going on at my home institution.   You all know me as a colleague and a fierce advocate of patient safet...

The 12 STI ’ s of Christmas, 2016
I missed posting this last year! (Sorry, it’s not iPhone friendly, so probably not viewable on any mobile devices, so please try it from your desktop machine). My yearly Christmas favorite, reposted: Courtesy of the British National Health Service (click the banner): NSFW. Funny, but Unsafe for work, unless your work involves STD’s in which case it’s required. It’s my seasonal favorite post, and I hope it’s one of yours. Not the STD’s, the funny song with equally amusing illustrations. The backstory, from a previous blog post: I have seen several searches of this blog for the British Na...

Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary
December 7, 1941. 75 years ago. If you meet a Pearl Harbor vet, thank ’em. They’re pretty rare (an 18 year old then would be 93 now…). Thanks to our Pearl Harbor vets. No related posts. (Source: GruntDoc)

Steven DenBeste 1952-2016
I cannot say I knew anything of the man except from his writing in the early days of blogging, and it was usually terrific ( i never got the Animae, but to each his own). The USS Clueless was his vessel, and ironic title given how he had a pretty good handle on things. And now I learn he’s died, way too young. I enjoyed the education he gave, and the erudition with which he brought it.   RIP. Related posts: Memorial Day, 2016 Happy Memorial Day, which, per US Memorial Day.org, is defined...
