B.B. King is Gone
The thrill is gone It’s gone away for good The thrill is gone baby It’s gone away for good Someday I know I’ll be open armed baby Just like I know a good man should Words not enough for all the influence, hard work and contributions to music this artist has achieved.   Related posts: Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington DC Martin Luther King Jr.: I have a dream (Source: Dr Shock MD PhD)

Lithium
I came across an impressive poem through an interpretation of the poem in the British Journal of General Practice. Lithium After the arc of ECT and the blunt concussion of pills, they gave him lithium to cling to— the psychiatrist’s stone. A metal that floats on water, must be kept in kerosene, can be drawn into wire. (He who had jumped in the harbor, burnt his hair off, been caught hanging from the light.) He’d heard it was once used to make hydrogen bombs, but now was a coolant for nuclear reactors, so he broke out of hospital barefoot and walked ten miles to meet me in the snow. The interpretation can be ...

Iqtell
So now and then I write about my workflow. Since email is the most important reason for diversion of my attention and often hard to handle due to the enormous amount of emails. This enormous amount of emails mostly caused by no or little email etiquette by some. Even email rules only helps a little. Even thought of ditching email altogether. Some emails are important since they are tasks, other emails do have important attachments. Some should be linked to an event in my calendar. Since years I’m used to work with “Getting Things Done” (GTD) principles. I tried several solutions to implement GTD in a work...

0.8 Amps of Happiness
This is the title of an impressive documentary of treatment with Electroshock or ECT. Three patients are portrayed as they’re being treated with Electro Shock Therapy (ECT) for their depressions. This documentary was made by Saskia Gubbels and her crew. ‘There will come a moment when I decide to lie down in the snow to die. Because living like this isn’t much of a life. It really isn’t. It’s death.’ These are the opening words of Lidwine in the documentary ‘0.8 Amps of Happiness.’ Severely depressed and suicidal, she has tried everything to break free from the downward spiral she finds herself trapped ...

Do coincidences exist?
Our brains are very good at explaining from being hyper attentive putting things together for avoiding harmful situations. Nice video, learn about magical thinking, palindrome, pareidolia and biases such as the selection bias, confirmation bias. These last two are not very strange to doctors especially those seasoned in clinical reasoning.   Related posts: Why are doctors more accurate with difficult cases? Depression and its treatment
Excellent video explaining depression from a neurobiological perspective. Around one in every 10 people will suffer from depression. Brain regions that control mood are often disrupted in depression. Antidepressant drugs or behavioral therapy can offer some relief. By understanding the brain better, our ability to treat depression should also get a boost. Watch the video to learn about the neural circuits affected in depression, and the molecular and cellular changes that might hold the key to treating it. Your Brain and Video Games
This is an interesting video since it uses video games to explain how your brain works. In this instance in video games. For instance Neural Prediction or the way you estimate a ball coming towards you so to be able to catch it in time. At least before it hits you in the face. Neuroscience is used to explain this phenomenon. More about sensory gaming, level developing in games, lag and latency compensation etc. all in this interesting video. Finally it explains why we suck at video games(original blog post).   Related posts: Video Games Affect The Brain, Good or Bad? Sex, Video Games and the Brain 50 Bra...

Twitter Psychosis
This abstract came up in my RSS feed, I was flabbergasted. Could that be true. Is it internet addiction or video game addiction all over again? Reading the full article showed the authors have very little to back up their suggested causal relation between twitter and psychosis. Other factors could more likely contribute to the episode. Moreover, another egg chicken problem. Kalbitzer, J., Mell, T., Bermpohl, F., Rapp, M., & Heinz, A. (2014). Cocoa workers tasting chocolate for the first time
The farmers who harvest cocoa beans for a few cents in the Ivory Coast never tasted chocolate. Watch their faces when they eat it for the first time. For us westerners chocolate is just one more thing. It’s inconsequential. We like to eat it, sometimes we get delighted by it for a minute. But more often than not it’s just one more snack to stuff our fat faces with. We don’t think about it and the incredible effort and resources that are required to make it. We take it for granted along with the other billion foods and the other billion other technologies and privileges we didn’t fight for. ...

AMEE 2014 and preparing for a conference
This year I will be attending the AMEE conference in Milan, Italy. The AMEE Conference provides an opportunity for all with an interest in medical and health professions education to meet together to hear about what’s new in the area, to share ideas and to network with colleagues from around the world. During my career conferences mostly deliver little new information especially taking into account the time needed for the conference. I try to attend those conferences with the most efficacy in the sense of learning and information. This comes down to mostly specialized conferences on small subject. Luckily this time I wi...
