VItamin D and pregnancy
Vitamin D, the one we get from the sun provides help for the absorption of calcium. Calcium, as we all know, helps in the growth and strengthening of our own bones as well as those of our unborn babies.  When women breastfeed, there is an inadequate amount of Vitamin D transferred to the baby. There is a real need for a supplement so your baby doesn’t suffer from the ill effects of Vitamin D deficiency. Should you bank your baby’s cord blood?
By 2015, 10,000 cord blood transplants are projected to be performed annually using publicly banked cord blood. That still leaves about 70 percent of patients in need of a transplant without a matching donor, according to the Cord Blood Forum, a nonprofit, private foundation based in Davis, Calif., that advocates for physician education and public awareness of cord blood medical therapies. Many more could be helped if baby’s cord blood were not thrown away, as it is in 96 percent of the nation’s 4 million annual births, they say. You can read about umbilical cord transplants  here .  For additional information you ca...

No sickle cells or pain to zap child’s sparkle
Article taken from The St. Louis American, written by Sandra Jordan The fact that Gabby Carter of Cape Girardeau, Missouri can go to school and play just about like any other child her age is nothing short of extraordinary. She received a cord blood stem cell transplant last summer at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It was her best chance at a cure for the debilitating complications of sickle cell anemia. With this hereditary blood disorder, normally round red blood cells, that contain the iron-rich hemoglobin protein that carries oxygen throughout the body, are sickle-shaped. Those irregularly shaped cells become ...

Cord blood transplant renews teen’s health – and perspective on life
This article is from Be The Match blog, http://www.bethematchblog.org/2013/06/cord-blood-transplant-renews-teens-health-and-perspective-on-life/ Teenagers are not always known for their sense of perspective. Elizabeth is the exception to the rule. The source of Elizabeth’s perspective is cancer – specifically, acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), first diagnosed when she was 10 years old. Aggressive treatment put the disease in remission after a month, while Elizabeth continued active treatment for two-and-a-half years, pushing through the chemotherapy pills and check-ups while trying to “be a normal kid.” She was app...

Prenatal Checkups and Tests
What You need to Know Pamela Brawer Save a Tot Prenatal care is the care you get while you are pregnant. This care can be provided by a doctor, midwife or other health care professional. The goal of prenatal care is to monitor the progress of a pregnancy and to identify potential problems before they become serious for either mom or baby. All mothers-to-be benefit from prenatal care. Women who see a health care provider regularly during pregnancy have healthier babies, are less likely to deliver prematurely, and are less likely to have other serious problems related to pregnancy. During prenatal visits, the health care p...

10 minute Workout for pregnant women ( who don’t have a lot of time!)
We asked three fitness experts to recommend three workouts you can fit in while baby’s snoozin’ in the afternoon or kicking away in her bouncy seat. Each mini routine is a series of three simple moves that shape up your entire body, especially the core and back muscles you need to strengthen for toting baby around. If you only have 10 minutes, do just a set or two of each exercise and then gradually add sets until you’ve worked up to a 20- or 30-minute workout. Before you move, get into the groove: • Check with your doctor or midwife first before starting to exercise postpartum. Most will recommend that you ...

Pregnancy’s Best Season
Is it better to be heavily pregnant in waning days of summer or the dead of winter? A colleague and I were discussing the million-dollar question just yesterday. She hasn’t had any kids. And I’m well into my second pregnancy. She really wanted to know. And it’s something I’ve thought about an awful lot. So I unloaded… Well, I said, both my pregnancies took place in the burning, shimmering, sidewalk-melting heat of summer. It’s true that it’s hot and sweaty. Most of the time you just want to lay under an air conditioner and stay still. Waiting for a subway in a hot tunnel can be overwhelming. The...

What is Cord Tissue Banking??
Both cord blood and umbilical cord tissue have been shown to be rich sources of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs). Whereas cord blood is exceptionally rich in hematopoietic (leading to blood and immunological cells) stem cells, cord tissue carries a more dense concentration of the MSCs. These cells have the ability to differentiate into a variety of different cell types, including bone cells (osteoblasts), chondroyctes (cartilage cells), ligament and tendon cells. Although there are no current medical therapies using stem cells derived from umbilical cord tissues, there is ongoing research for their use in treatment of: Diabe...

10 things you can do for yourself in 10 minutes!!
1. Meditate: Okay, this may sound loopy and unrealistic, but just try it. Close your eyes and clear your mind. Try to find a quiet place and do some deep breathing. Hey, if the meditation turns into a nap, go with it! 2. Work out: Why not squeeze in some exercise? Yes, you can totally get in a great workout in 10 minutes. It’ll help you get closer to your prebaby shape and keep you energized. 3. Pick up the phone or video chat: 10 minutes is not a long time to catch up with your friends, but look at it this way: It’s two minutes longer than a speed date. Call your best friend and use this time to gossip, vent and...

Cord Blood Banking And Autism
This study uses a child’s own previously collected cord blood, not a sibling’s. This is a crucial point. When a sibling’s cord blood is used and it’s less than a perfect match, transplant rejection is likely and dangerous. The alternative is to use powerful drugs to suppress the immune system of the child receiving the transplant. This is a serious and potentially dangerous intervention. Few physicians would justify immunosuppression in non-life-threatening circumstances. This is particularly the case when studies have yet to show any clear benefit. This research is new and relatively unexplored. Not only d...
