Academic Book Week: Tips for academic book authors
Academic Book Week (#AcBookWeek) is a week-long celebration of the diversity, variety and influence of academic books throughout history run by the Booksellers Association, returning for a fourth year from 4-9 March 2019. This week, The Source will be recognising the important role of academic books, including how they engage critical audiences such as the media and policy-makers, as well as reflecting on their evolution and what the future might hold for this research format. Dear authors – BMC Medicine responds to authors ’ wish list
In January 2019, to mark the new year, Dr. Madhu Pai conducted an informal survey on Twitter to ask researchers to put together an author wish list, addressed to medical journal editors. Being the flagship medical journal of the BMC Series, and having worked with Madhu previously, BMC Medicine felt that a thoughtful response was warranted. His author wish list had many salient points, for which we felt our responses could help to de-mystify the peer review process. Below the wishes (in bold) are the responses from the editorial team at BMC Medicine. Flickr/AJ Cann, CC BY-SA 1) Please don’t make the online submission pro...

Introducing Advances in Aerodynamics
The blog post has been cross-posted from the SpringerOpen blog. Aerodynamics is the study of motion of air, particularly about the interaction between air and solid body, such as flow around an aircraft. Its study is closely related to the theoretical advances in fluid dynamics and gas dynamics. Traditional aerodynamics is about the study of flow field around objects of various shapes, evaluates the lift and drag, and models the wave interactions around a complex geometry for the external and internal flows. In recent decades, the research in aerodynamics has progressed into a new era. Interdisciplinary subjects have be...

Critical Ultrasound Journal becomes The Ultrasound Journal
We are excited to announce a name change for the official journal of WINFOCUS (World Interactive Network Focused on Critical UltraSound), a world-leader in advancing the use of Point-of-Care Ultrasound to improve the health of all patients across the globe.  The name will be changed from the Critical Ultrasound Journal to The Ultrasound Journal to reflect the expanding scope of ultrasound in medicine and the inclusive nature of WINFOCUS and the journal. While ultrasound is a “critical” component of health care decisions and practice, having “critical” in the name of the journal has led to some confusion as to the ...

Diversity beyond gender   – a new year pledge
You can read the original post Digital Science’s Medium blog. Happy New Year! As we regret our former cheese-based life choices and get back into the swing of things, January is also a time to look forward and make resolutions. 2019 could be a year of great change and uncertainty. One topic never far from our minds is diversity and inclusion, specifically ensuring that ALL people are represented and heard. During this time of change, one way that we can achieve greater representation within research is to each commit to doing one small thing to change the current culture. On Saturday 3rd November 2018 we held a sess...

Introducing BMC Materials
In recent years, science and technology have revolutionized our way of life, improving well-being and comfort for all mankind. The discovery of new materials with unique features at the macro- and nano-scales has played a significant part in this advancement. The possibility of producing materials able to perform different functions and respond to external stimuli will undoubtedly be an extremely important research area for the foreseeable future. These new materials will play a crucial role, for example in additive manufacturing, since they will be designed and structured to perform specific operations and adapt autonomou...
