Intraoperative adverse events grading tools and their role in honest and accurate reporting of surgical outcomes

Employing a standardized intraoperative adverse event (iAE) classification grading system,1 Gawaria et  al reported that iAEs occurred during 34% of visceral surgeries and 28% of nonvisceral surgeries. The authors also found that an increasing iAE grade was associated with an increased incidence of postoperative complications and prolonged length of stay.2 We commend the authors for their thoughtful approach to understanding the interplay of iAEs, their timing, and severity.
