Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by inflammatory lung injury and carries a global mortality rate near 40%.1 It occurs in approximately 6-10% of patients with respiratory failure who are admitted through the emergency department.2,3 Even within the context of the intensive care unit, the diagnosis is missed in up to half of all patients meeting criteria for the disease.1 Early recognition is critical to ensure that evidence-based therapies can be implemented without delay.
