Colony stimulating factor-1 producing endothelial cells and mesenchymal stromal cells maintain monocytes within a perivascular bone marrow niche
CSF-1 is an important maintenance factor for monocytes, but the functionally important CSF-1 producing bone marrow niche cells are unknown. Emoto et al. reveal that Ly6C− monocytes are maintained by CSF-1 producing sinusoidal endothelial cells, whereas Ly6Chi monocytes require combined production of CSF-1 by endothelium and Lepr+ perivascular stromal cells.
