Lung Transplantation: Advances Through Collaboration

It “takes a village” to care for a lung transplant recipient. With advances in surgical technique for implantation, donor organ preservation and recovery, immunosuppression, and medical management over the past six decades, there has been a remarkable improvement in outcomes following lung transpla ntation. Today, the overall median survival following lung transplantation is 6.7 years. In fact, at some centers, the median survival has approached 10 years with a handful of lung recipients surviving close to 30 years posttransplant.
