A beginner ’s guide to diversity, equity, and inclusion typecasting

This was it. I had finally earned my seat at the proverbial table. I will admit, it was a bit smaller than I had anticipated —a modest coffee table in my Chair’s oversized office. This was my first departmental leadership meeting after my appointment as Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and I was admittedly a bit nervous. Suddenly, my well-styled dress and cardigan seemed incongruous with the slate gray power suits donned by my White male counterparts. I looked over at the other vascular surgeon in the room, and I could tell he knew what I was thinking—“Where are the cigars and glasses of scotch that I had imagined?” He gave me a reassuring smile.
