Closing the gap: Using simulation to improve public health clinicians ’ affirming beliefs and behaviors with LGBT clients
Quality health care for sexual and gender minorities (LGBT: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) is affected by fear of discrimination and difficulty finding providers with knowledge of LGBT-specific care needs. Individuals who are LGBT report feeling stigma when utilizing healthcare at a level 3 times higher than their heterosexual peers (Whitehead et al., 2016), and providers express discomfort in caring for LGBT individuals due to unfamiliarity with sexual health needs and appropriate terms for their identified gender (Smith& Turrell, 2017).
