Preventative Services Use and Risk Reduction for Potentially Preventative Hospitalizations among People with Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Potentially preventable hospitalizations (PPHs) or ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) are described as “unplanned hospital admissions which potentially could have been prevented with the provision of effective, timely outpatient care.”1 The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed specific prevention quality indicators (PQIs) to highlight unmet health needs for specific acute a nd chronic conditions that may lead to PPHs.2,3 Compared to the general population, adults with TSCI are more likely to be hospitalized due to improper management of secondary conditions such as raspatory complications, urinary tract infection(UTI), or pneumonia.
