How long should clinicians spend sampling the pharynx for gonorrhoea culture specimens?

Sarah Stuart, Daniel Richardson, Collins Iwuji, Suneeta Soni Sampling for gonorrhoea from the pharynx is important to maintain antimicrobial resistance surveillance; however, the sensitivity of pharyngeal culture is poor. We gained consensus from our local sexual health network of clinicians on the time spent taking pharyngeal gonorrhoea culture. From an anonymous survey of 98 clinicians, the estimated mean time was 4.63 s (s.d. ± 2.04) and there were no differences in clinician years of experience. We are now using these findings to design an educational tool with the aim of improving pharyngeal gonorrhoea culture sensitivity.
