Alternatives to Ankle Joint Replacement

The gradual and continuous increase in frequency of total ankle replacement (TAR) implies its favorable results compared with other options for management of end-stage ankle arthritis. However, long-term results following TAR are not known, and comparisons with conventional treatments, such as ankle arthrodesis, do not show a definitive advantage of TAR over ankle arthrodesis. Considering the relatively young age of patients with ankle arthritis coupled with the uncertainty of TAR longevity, it would seem that preventing or halting the progression of ankle arthritis in its earlier stages is of utmost importance.
