Diabetes Control before Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

We appreciate the response to our recent study by Syed and colleagues who note two areas of interest in their letter. The first is a request for a sub-analysis of cases with either a serious complication (n=361) or infectious complication (n=431) to identify how well these individuals tolerated their complications based on their preoperative glycemic control. Although the MBSAQIP is the largest and most comprehensive metabolic and bariatric surgery outcomes dataset available, it does not collect granular data to accurately study how well patients tolerated their complications such as postoperative leak.
