Checkmate with Dignity

Mr. John Williams (as I'll call him) was well-known to our Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU) staff. On this admission, he suffered from multi-organ failure and a rapidly dropping platelet level. During a brief respite, when he seemed to improve, we moved him from the CICU to the step-down Progressive Care Unit (PCU). One morning, after our team had rounded on Mr. Williams, he turned to us and said: “You all go on, I want to talk to the Doc.”
