Defining the social determinants of health for nursing action to achieve health equity: A consensus paper from the American academy of nursing
The 2019 to 2020 American Academy of Nursing (American Academy of Nursing, 2019) policy priorities document states that “they have a clear and distinct focus on social determinants of health and uses this lens to advance policies and solutions within each of the three overarching priorities”– advancing health equity and championing wellness; pr omoting innovation and sustainability; and reducing patient, provider, and system burden. As representatives of five Academy expert panels, we acknowledge the importance of this statement, placing social determinants of health in the center of the policy work conducted by the Academy.
